ESXi USB passthrough nightmare

I went to upgrade one of my clients to ESXi 5 today and setup a USB Fax modem for one of the VM's that will be the fax server. Everything was going great until i setup the USB passthrough. I passed through every USB controller like I always do but this host is installed on a USB drive so once I passed that through nothing good happened.

It took me forever to figure out what was going on. None of my USB devices would be detected by the host and the vSphere client was acting funny and slow. I thought that this USB modem was simply not being detected by ESXi 5 since it is pretty old.

After googling for an hour i read that if you passthrough the USB drive you have ESXi installed on it stops writing changes so you cant change or do anything and pretty much a complete reinstall is the easiest and fastest way to fix this.

I had to reinstall the entire ESXi host then only pass through a single USB controller.

Learned the hard way today. Now my question is why does ESXi let you even pass that through and how can you easily tell which device your install USB is on?
