so i have my small home lab running esxi with local storage and shared storage.

Have a quick question about thin provisioning vms.

After creating a vm and logging into storage server or esxi host via ssh i look at the vmdk files and they are the size i would expect to see with a think provisioned disk.

Am i missing something here or shouldnt the disks be the size of the used space within the vm?

If you are talking about 'ls -l' that will I think give you a misleading answer. Try using the vsphere client to browse the datastore. Drill down into that VM folder, and it should show you the "size" and the "provisioned size".

yes i was using the ls -lh command, also df to see total space used.

my next question if 'ls -lh' is misleading is df also misleading.

quick example, now the vmfs volume is showing 65% full when i run 'df'. if the df command is misleading in theory will it be showing > 100% used space if i continue to add vms to this datastore?

We are heavily virtualized at work. I was taking a peek at some of our VMs and the ones that are thin provisioned show up as danswartz mentioned. There is basically a size on disk and a provisioned size for the vmdk files. So for example a bare bones VM with just OS installed may show up as having 2GB size but 50GB provisioned if that is how it was thin provisioned.
