Well, i thought about going to esxi server for my virtualization , BUT there is no mac client for me to administrate it :( boooo hissss

i'm not sure i can use esxi :( i run my macbook pro all the time, i could boot to windows 7 i guess but i mainly use osx.

Thoughts ?


My alternate is to continue with 2008r2 and all my hosts.

thought about it, trust me i'm thinking about it.

I have a legit version of windows 7 that i boot to on my macbook pro 13" once in a while, so its a possibility, but do i want to ?
 
The other option is to run VMWare Server on top of something like Ubuntu, where most of what you need to do can be done via an HTTP interface. I don't think the remote console can run in Mac OS X, however.

However, I wouldn't recommend this. I just switched to ESXi because of the inconvenience of VMWare Server. Basically, it's a huge pain in the ass. Every time there's a kernel update, you need to recompile, and the compilation tends to not work right without patching it with a patch from the community. ESXi is much easier to manage.

So I think you're suck with Windows.
 
Just use windows and 90% of your issues will go away.
 
Just run Win7 in a VM for the client. That's what I do for now. Big rumors of a OSX vSphere client on the way but nothing solid yet. Almost all of VMware's field SEs now carry MacBook Pros so it makes sense.

Or use CoRD and RDP in to a vCenter server or Windows VM.

I would use windows more if i could get all my traffic to route through my vpn connection through my untangle so im protected from spyware and other CRAP! :)

Although I think that is overkill, if you are worried that much about malware, there are many products out there ranging from free and simple to paid and complex.

I personally use eset nod32 on my laptop and I am happy.

Install Virtualbox on your mac and install a Windows VM for management of the ESXi server.

Don't click on stupid shit :) That pretty much solves 99% of malware issues.
 
On my ESXi server I run a Windows 7 VM in addition to my Windows Server VM. I can then use remote desktop to connect a VM to run the vSphere client. For 99% of my needs, that works. For the other 1% (initial setup, fixing something gone terribly wrong, etc) a local VM, bootcamp, or a real PC are the reality.

I don't click on stupid shit, however i wanted my stuff all routed through my box :) that's all :)

thats all resolved now, im staying with 2008r2 hyper v server.
 
I run an XP VM in OSX to manage ESXi for several of our clients. I prefer XP over 7 in a VM because the VSphere client, Visio, and some crappy time management program we use are the only things I use that VM for, so with XP I can throw it only 512MB of RAM and it's happy.
 
Just use Snow Leopard Server on an Apple Xserve and use Parallels server for Mac. That'll have a lot of upgrade support into the future, oh wait, no it won't, Apple is getting back out of the server business.

But you could even run it on XServe hardware if you order it before Jan 31 when Apple stops selling server hardware.

Mac mini server is 899$ :) thats perfect for me :)

I just setup a mac server it was easy, ISH lots of playing around but i figured it all out its working great, now to implement the firewall and all should be good.
