ESXi + Rackable c2004 + Which RAID controller?

Hey,
I have a Rackable c2004 server with an HDAMA rev.G mobo. The server came with a 3ware 9500s RAID controller however ESXi does not support that controller, which is weird. Anyways, I went through this list: http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/esx40_whitebox_HCL.php and found the Adaptec 2410 RAID controller as one that was compatible. I purchased that controller on ebay but found that it isn't compatible with the rackable c2004 HDAMA mobo as the controller works fine in my computer but the controller's kernel keeps failing to start in the server when it's installed in the server.

So here is my question: Is there someone out there that purchased one of the c2004 rackable servers at some point and installed ESXi on it with a 4 port SATA RAID controller that is a decent price that works properly?

What you define as a Decent Price?
Are you just running R1, R10 or are you looking R5 as well?
 
I'm looking for R5 since that will be a decent compromise between anti-failure, speed and size. I've got 4 500gig drives. I would like to do R10 but I would be losing about a terabyte of space, one of the machines this will be running will be a download/storage machine.

Cost wise I only spent about $250 for the server so I'm looking probably no more than half of that cost. PCI-X is all this machine has so no PCIe unfortunately.
 
BTW your 3ware does have VMware ESX4 drivers

Just cause its not on the HCL, doesnt mean it doesnt work.

If not then get something off the HCL that is PCI-X....like an Areca 11xx series controller
 
Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure I tried to the drivers that you have listed but I may have done it incorrectly, importing them into ESX4. I'll have to give that another try. If not I'll look into that card you have recommended.

Did you solve the problem? I have the same unit from rackspace and have found the bios to be a bit unstable.
