So I'm completely new to Virtualized computing but I'm about to build a new server and am interested in learning it.
Before I do so, I was curious if this is possible, I've only read a little bit up on ESXi so far.
I'll be running an AMD FX-8320 with 16 gigs of ram, 4x 3-TB HD and 1x 1-TB HD.
I want to have the 4- 3TBs in a Raid 5 and have that be it's own datastore. I would like to run Freenas or some other such NAS OS and it will be my dedicated home media server, most likely with 2 cores and about 4 gigs of ram.
Then I want to have the 1TB be it's own datastore and have it run a flavor of linux, on there I would be running a ventrilo or mumble server along with a game server for starbound/minecraft/terreria whatever.
I was trying to read and I was seeing that ESXi can't do software raid locally so the above might not be possible with ESXi, but.. I come to you experts for advice.
If the above is not an option. I was probably looking at running a flavor of linux, running VMware workstation and then doing the same thing with the freenas and then another version of linux for the other stuff.
