ESXi, Passthrough and backup

We are using ESXi 5 for our Suse Enterprise Server. We have a large samba-file area of 4TB of data and connected to this is a HP Tapebackup with a 8 slot robot.
When we initially installed this server we had to do a passthrough on our Areca raid-card and the scsi-card for the tape backup.
We now have a problem that we cant do snapshots or backups with Vmware Data Recovery, i'm getting that this is because of the passthrough.

I'll guess that i can do a Raw-mapping of the 4TB data storage and then i don't need to passthrough the Areca card.
We had problems with the wide-scsi card connected to the Suse guest. Somehow we didn't manage to get both tapedrive and taperobot to work without passthrough.
So what options do we have?
