here is what I have, and I would love to run ESXI on it

phenom X6
8gb of ddr3
asrock 880g matx board
2xpci
1xpci-express x16
1xpci-express x1


I have 4x1.5TB WD greens I want to run raid 10 for NAS style storage for my whole network

1xssd

2x500gb samsungs I want to raid 1 for VM's

esxi doesnt like the onboard raid controller, I have a Silicon image card that esxi is supposed to like for the raid 1 on the 500gb, but its not showing up

I was going to snag the promise x400 for the 1.5tb drives.

the SSD can be on the onboard stuff.

the high point card I have sitting here shows the drives up as single drives(like the onboard stuff does) and I cnt raid it so its useless

with the PCI promise card, and another PCI 2 port Silicon Image SIL3512 card that works, all I have left is the PCI Express x1 and x16

can I get a decent not uber expensive 2 port NIC?

I hope to run a WHS image, a Server 08 R2 image, and maybe a linux server and pf sense image to play with

I really dont want to have to split up the disk space, I guess I could split 2tb of it for media and rest for docs ETC

PITA though.

The way VMware/esxi says to get around it is by doing a software raid/span on the disk from within the os and i know most people hate the idea of spanning drives but in this case the partitions are still sitting on a single real raid array

I have a feeling this wont be my only foray into this stuff so I might as well have some hardware...
 
realized I had a google offers newegg credit I had to use this month so the promise card is on the way.

intell PT nic and silicon image card also ordered
 
alright so I've ordered another nic. pci instead of pcie4x this time, so I can get a pcie raid card.

returning the promise card, time to man up and get a real raid card, used perc 5 off ebay probably
