ESXi Build

Basically planning a rebuild of my old ESXi home system.

I currently have a micro ATX DQ77KB , 3470S Quad i5 , 16gb ram.


my new system i have ordered these new parts

Intel S5520HC with dual quad E5520's
Supermicro CSE -745 case (dual 920w)
Dual M1015 IBM HBA's
Dual intel 1000/PT's
6x4gb ibm 10600mhz sticks ECC

Questions on my build are the supermicro case only has 1 8pin and 1 4pin , the motherboard requires 2 8pin for the cpu's now can i just 1 4pin on the 8pin (all the rails are joined on the 8pin + and - ?).

the dual 1015's . will i have any issues running 2 of those ? (no experience with those brand of controllers)

the ram for these boards , is it very sensitive for speeds ? , i know desktop boards you can usually shove just about any ram of the type it takes ddr2,ddr3 and i will usually just run at the max speed the ram can do. I bought 4gb 10600mhz cl9 , which the board supports in other brands just not the particular micron one i bought.

The virtual machines i use for now are

unRAID passthrough 1 of the 1015m's (runs 8 disks)
Windows 8.1 for simply accounting and my esxi backup
Windows 2012 R2 for testing and certifications
4 turnkey disto's for various things
OSX 10.9 (development)
OSX 10.8 (Testing and support for some of my clients)

im very caught up on storage , what is recommended ? ssd's ? storage pools with zfs?

i would like to start testing out more virtual machines, and the parts were really cheap....which was the biggest reason.

If you are wanting to try out more virtual machines running at the same time, seems like it would be better to buy 8gb sticks instead of the 4gb.

For the pin, you can probably just buy the adapter.

Yes the DQ77KB only supports 16g , its sodimm's too, its my old board.

the new one can support 192gb i believe and has 12 slots.


my current storage is 1x120gb ssd , 1x320gb 7.2k 2.5" , 1x750gb wd black 3.5" all for VM's

this storage setup is not good , its not even backed up and needs to be.

unraid - 8x3tb hdd's ----> this holds all my files for media.

i would like to have a 3tb data store (4x2.5" 1tb 5.4k? in some type of ZFS), 4x128gb ssd's all running there own VM and i can put the other less demanding vm's on the 3tb datastore and use it to backup the ssd's.

those parts have been ordered.

8gb sticks cost about 40-50$ a peice (to canada).

i have a guy here that can sell me 4gb ddr3 ecc for 10$ a stick.

the new board has 12 ram slots , i plan on filling them all with 4gb sticks yeilding 48gb.
