Hey all

ive installed a copy of ws 2k8 r2 sp1 as a dc. recently ive moved and therfore shut down the esxi 5 server. as i restarted the esxi server, ws 2k8 stopped booting correctly. it boots, but ends up in a black screen with cursor.

ive tried the regedit thing by changing de mounted devices drive letters - no luck. it changes them back and the machine still wont boot to safe mode or normal..

any hints?

Did you activate windows? On server 2008 if you don't activate you normally just get a black screen with a cursor

You only get the black screen when you logon - at least on W2K8R2. I can't remember exactly the behaviour on W2K8.

If its R2 I would reboot and choose VGA (hit f8 at boot up) but if you look on the web there are lots of kb articles for W2K8R2 + SP1 + black screen. Did you install SP1 recently or been on there for ages?

i install a msdnaa image with sp1 included.

ive reinstalled since then. but now - it comes again.. although its activated.

ive been through this 3 times now:

installation of the server works fine, iis, ad, adcs, dhcp installation without a problem.

when i try to get to dhcp console start -> adtools -> dhcp

i get LOTS of errors pointing on drive d: (which is a cdrom..) in to the folder D:\w7rtm\admin\...

if i reboot now - system is broken. no rdp, no boot, nothing. but i DIDNT change a single option on this system. just installed some roles and features!!

anyone has a hint where to begin? bad iso? i cant believe this..

when i go to repair console, theres no c: it changed to D:

if i change this in regedit, it gets overwritten..

system wont boot. it finds nothing to repair.

anyone?

mistakes in configuring the vm? read about: “smbios.addHostVendor"

sth to do with this??

im completly outta my mind.. need this test lab for a serious project.

Check your ISO against Microsoft's posted sha1 sums.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/subscriptions/downloads/default.aspx?pv=36:137

I'm assuming from what you've posted your using this image (your filename might be different but that won't change the checksum, it's the same image as what msdnaa has posted).
Code:
Windows Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 (x64) - DVD (English)

There are many tools for verifying checksums, but I like to use HashTab: http://implbits.com/HashTab.aspx

i got this on my image:

Google that hash. You get this post, 2 Chinese sites and one Russian forum. You have a bad/pirate ISO. Get a new one.

And you will every time. As long as you got it from a legit place you're fine.

I still think the ISO is his issue. ;)

I have small advantage though, I actually have access to/subscriptions to both MSDNAA, and TechNet. :p With the new info, I just checked. Hes got the wrong ISO. That Hash value is the same as the debug/checked version which is avialable to MSDNAA users.

Ideep -> You need to download the version labeled "Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard-Enterprise-Datacenter-Web with SP1 64-bit (English)" not the version you have.

okay, i downloaded another one: the one wo SP1 ..

but should be better anyways. ill check back asap!

so far so good - new iso, new luck. no errors with dhcp and everythings just smooth atm
