I got my hands on a HP ProLiant ML330 G6 and have now installed ESXi 5 as a base.
I first tried OpenIndiana as I wanted to go for ZFS and after a few hours of trying to get the network to run (not really used to solaris) eventually OI didn't find the raid controller I put a passthrough on. I gave up on solaris as I couldn't get it to work so I tried debian (figured with mdadm). Following is how it looks.
As I still want a SAN NFS storage, I needed to host solaris/debian on a hdd (160gb) attached to one of the ports on the 2-port controller. So as the picture shows, only the 4 ports are being passed through the guest os. This works in debian (never checked lshw in solaris). Debian sees the controller, but not the hdds.
During bootup of debian, this is what the console shows.
As of this moment, I have 2x 1tb samsung drives attached to the 4-port sata controller.
If it matters, Embedded SATA Raid is disabled in hp bios. I want either zfs or mdadm but I'm out of ideas as the guest os can't see the disks. Cfdisk and df -h shows nothing. I've heard software raid doesn't work with ESXi 5, and thats fine, I only want to use those ports to connect hdds. I don't see why that wouldn't work.
