This is the hardware platform:
HP N36L Microserver
8GB non-ECC RAM
HP P410i RAID-Controller with Batterypack
5x1TB Samsung F1 7200rpm (RAID 5).
The server is running ESXi 5 from a mem-stick and I have a couple of virtual machines on it. Since the Microserver can't passthrough hardware I had to create a couple of <2TB LUNs on the P410i controller and create VMDK's on the LUNs.
Storage is handled by a virtual Ubuntu 11.04 Server using LVM to create a large volume for the storage (mounted as /lvm).
This has been working great for some time now, but the idea of encrypting the lvm has been in the back of my mind since day 1. But since this is a virtual machine, is there something that I need to bare in mind (snapshots etc?). I want to protect the volume if someone get physical access to the machine.
I'm expecting a performance hit, especially as it's a VM.
