So I get to the portion where it says hit enter to continue and I can't.. the keyboard stops working.

About 25% through the loading bar the numlock turns off and the keyboard stops working.

I've turned on legacy support, IOMMU and enabled port 60/64 emulation just in case.

Any suggestions?

Already had to inject the network card drives to get rid of that error.

using Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3

Old ps/2 should work. Sounds like the USB drivers aren't loading right.

Bought one on amazon for $6, spose it'll get here Monday with everything else. Unless someone else might have another solution to getting around a USB keyboard problem?

Hmm might run down to walmart or bestbuy and purchase a PCI USB card, sounds like that can work too, I'll see if I can report back later if I find one. Little more expensive, but sounds like Keyboard/Mouse pasthrough can be problematic without a PCI card.

Did you try another keyboard? I had a similar issue with a keyboard that was on its way out.

Don't have any more at the moment, it's a brand new keyboard (2 months old) it works just fine in Bios and on my laptop.

Speaking of BIOS...I know sometimes its best to set it to defaults and/or turn off all the extra shit that is enabled by default. Eliminating some of the extra features may assist you with narrowing down what is the cause. Of course you can try the PCI USB, but I don't know if ESXi will have a driver for the pci usb card.

Pci USB card was a fail. After like 5 different stores I managed to find a ps/2 keyboard at Radio Shack. Install is working now.

looked at the logs after finishing up installation for USB I see these:

"new usb device found...
USB Hub found
5 ports detected
interface is claimed by hub
device is not available for passthrough."

That repeats a few times throughout the logs.

Further down it reads
USB1 - 7: Suspended

Did you pull out the PCI USB card before those log entries or afterwards?

Also, did you plug the USB keyboard into the USB2.0 or USB3.0 ports? Did you plug in directly or thru a USB hub?

That was after I took out the pci card. They were directly connected to the back motherboard ports into the USB2 ports.

Any recommendations?

I can connect to my server, but I'm unable to progress with ESXi because I can't install anything due to having my ISO files on USB drives.

I've passed through the USB controller supposedly, but when attempting to mount an ISO to a VM, USB is not an option.

Very strange, I have the 990FXA-UD5 and I'm not having any issues with USB at all. I am not passing the USB controller because I boot ESXi from a USB key.

Have you tried mounting the ISO on the thick client so you don't have to use the ESXi USB at all?

It doesn't work like that. Copy the ISOs to a VMFS datastore, or use the client to attach the ISO locally from your desktop - ESX can't talk to USB drives (they're not SCSI, nor are they emulating SCSI like SATA will).

Yeah, just managed to do that by uploading the ISO to one of the drives. No USB is problematic for me though, I have all of my media backed up on USB and it's the only way for me to migrate it all over to ESXi or a vm =/

I've supposedly installed a VM with ubuntu, but when it says to reboot it / I restart the VM, it just sits with a black console at _

FreenNAS VM works fine, but I'm having trouble giving it a hard drive to function, any time I attempt to edit settings to do pass through, it says to use the vsphere web client, but I'm not seeing an option for that. It worked for a second, then I exited out, now I get that message.

I'd like to pass through USB drives to migrate over some data, and I need to pass through my drives connected to my M1015 to make a ZFS pool.

I managed to get ubuntu installed then right after it requires the reboot and it restarts, I get this: a blank console and I'm unable to do anything

So you don't have to do that to pass through usb drives - that type of support is built in, or should be, for passing through USB keys/drives/dongles to a VM.

You probably installed Ubuntu in a way that has totally confused it. Just put the ISO on your desktop, use the client to attach the ISO to the guest, install, and you should be good to go - Ubuntu understands everything about ESX, so it'll work natively without anything else.

Hmm I've re-installed a couple of times now, I'll try from local ISO instead of the one I put on the datastore. The install works fine, it's just after it requires the reboot it gives me the black screen on the console. I've installed FreeNAS the same way, no issues.

That's really weird - what version are you installing? What do you have attached/passed through to the guest?

Using the latest version of ubuntu desktop.

This is all I'm passing through

Not able to get my FreeNAS to see the LSI card to attempt to create a ZFS datastore at the moment either for some reason.

Managed to get ubuntu to install finally. Now to figure out how to get my LSI card to show up

You shouldn't ever need to pass a USB controller through - you can pass USB devices through natively to a guest with a virtual controller.

ahh ok. Any suggestions on getting the LSI card to show up in either ubuntu or freenas?

I see that you have configured the devices to be available for passthrough, however did you actually add the devices to the VM? You have to edit your VM and add your passthrough capable devices to it.
And like others have posted there isn't a reason in this screnario for you to pass USB through to this VM

These are the only options I have available. the parallel and serial and scsi device are all blank except for serial port 1 which is shown

You have to have a USB device plugged into the host, then you can tack it on. Also, why in the world are you giving something 12G of ram and 4 vCPUs?

I've got 2 USB drives plugged in.

I was running a couple game servers and it was eating up the ram so I just added in a lot to make it easier so I wouldn't have to worry about it. It's the only vm anyway right now.

Ah, ok - scale down the CPUs till you see them maxing out.

you have the USB controller enabled for passthrough - disable it and give it back to the host, and you should be able to use a virtual USB controller and USB guest access just fine. You're overthinking things.
