esxi 5.1 troubles & thoughts

I recently upgraded my server to ESXi 5.1, in part because I wanted to try Windows 8/Server2012. The update went smooth, and Chilly's drivers still work fine after the update.

Having tried it out, I want to passthrough the USB 3.0 controller to a Windows VM. However when I try adding it on the passthrough list, it doesn't "stick". I reboot and it still isn't there. Has anyone had a problem like this? Beyond this, there doesn't seem to be any way to have my external hard drive work at full speed (I'm not too familiar with all the features of ESXi, so I tried adding a USB hub directly to the VM, but it said it wasn't compatible with the VM OS (windows 7)).

Also, I'm using Openindiana for my napp-it ZFS server. I was previously using a vmxnet3 adapter with 5.0, but now with 5.1 I am not able to get that same adapter working. The result has been decreased transfer speeds.

Finally, is there any way to try out the paid features of esxi for my own learning? Would I just have to reinstall an unlicensed copy every 30 days? How about vcenter server?

Thanks for reading!

It's 60 days for Enterprise plus licensing trials. If you installed the Free hypervisor license, then it flips over. Also, you didn't need to upgrade to 5.1 to get Win8/2k12 support if you were already running 5. Update 4 included it as a supported OS>
