ESXi + 3Ware 95xx RAID Controller = No Install

Hey everyone. Just curious if anyone has been able to get ESXi installed onto a 3Ware 95xx controlled set of HDDs? I picked up a c2004 Rackable server with 4x500gig SATA drives controlled by 3Ware 9500s controller. The problem is that ESXi doesn't have the drivers built in for the 3Ware controllers and there is a work around site that has you copy the drivers into an install.tgz within the ESXi ISO but I keep getting a pink screen on that. The pink screen comes during the install not on first boot after install (as mentioned in one of the posts on that article)

If you have been successful on getting ESXi installed with the 3Ware controller I would like some help or even the ISO that you used for the install. I'm not sure if UltraISO is manipulating the install.tgz file properly once I apply it back into the ISO.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Boot ESXi off a USB drive. Load the driver. Use those drives for datastores. That way you don't have to worry about drivers during the install or later when you do upgrades.
 
Ahhhh, very excellent. Didn't even think about that. What brand of USB drive would be the best for something like this? Is there a way to mount it internally instead of externally? (A kit to buy or something?)

Any. Once ESXi boots it doesn't really use it. Faster is nice if you grab the VI Client off the server (my slow ones send it to me at like 150KB/s..takes a while). My motherboards have an internal USB port..but you could probably use an internal header or something.
