I feel like a dick asking a question I should be able to Google.

But seriously? Wtf am I doing wrong. Do I use vSphere? vCenter? Do I run it as a VM?

Is there a good ESX 3.5 guide that teaches the fundamentals?

Step one: Get an ESX host up an running.
Step two: Setup a windows server (virtual is fine) and install the Virtual Infrastructure Manager.
Step three: Using vcenter client (or vsphere client) log in using the aformentioned windows server's name or IP w/ its administrator username/pw
Step 4 - Add the existing ESX host to the managed hosts list
Step 5 - Add another ESX server.
Step 6 - Create a cluster..

This is a really rough write up done from my poor memory, so It's just basic. Here's a good link about how to get running once you get the VIM up.

Cool, so I am on the right lines.

The spanner in the works is I need to install an iSCSI type software, to present the hard drive directly attached to server 1 to all VM's (so I can cluster properly).

Does this sound correct?
