Some time has gone by since VM backup was discussed the last time. I vividly remember the feedback I received on vRanger and there was an occasional call for a pure VCB solution.

Thus it's time to ask again, how do you back up your ESX VMs? Also as a sub-category, is your backup solution SQL server aware?
 
VCB w. VSS for the appropriate VMs and pre-freeze and post-thaw scripts for the things that are not VSS aware.
 
I think I posted this in the other thread also but I'll put it here too.

ESX 3.5U5

Using Backup Exec 12.5 + VCB (of course). For the Netware VM, using an agent for it as well as full VM snapshot (for file level restores). Using it to backup Windows, Netware and linux VMs, as well as another windows server over the network. Backups server is also the vCenter server. No SQL backups (with agent that is). Backups server has a 500GB lun to use for temp space for VCB.

I really like using Backup Exec because it is very simple for the other admins to understand. If we were using scripts, well, lets just say that I'd be exclusively responsible for its backups.
 
If you environment gets really big you'll need vRanger or some other 3rd-party company because the data recovery can't handle large environments without help.
 
VDR no - although 1.1 allows up to 10 appliances (1000 vms). VCB can handle anything.
