Hi guy, my name is Claudio and I'm Italien. Sorry for my english.
I have one question about ESX 3.5 (Update 3 and 4, and I think all version!!).
I have execute the test in more servers (HP ML350, ML370, IBM ecc...) the problem is some for all.
Problem Description:
If I copy one file up 2Gb (6Gb or 8Gb or 32Gb) after few minutes the LAN go to LOW and after few minuter return UP. The copy functioning but if the time is extimated for 32Gb twenty minutes, in the real the copy during 1h50min. The problem don't change if the start from server or client.
If you copy a file small 2Gb the problem don't exist.

I think that this problem is permanent and not is only during the copy..... but is only my thinking.

is indifferent, the problem is in a vm and a COS. It's all copy from external to vm.

The esx native where I've the problem are a HP ML 370 with 2 Proc. Quad Core 2,8. The VM is a Windows Server 2003 x64 eng. 4 Proc. and 8Gb RAM. But the problem is some in all VM with Windows Server 2003 32bit, or Windows Server 2008 32 or x64.
 
I have try with one CPU, but the problem don't solve

I have try with:
on-board NIC (HP)
Intel Dual Fiber Chanel
Intel pro-1000 server.
 
Okay, what switches are the NICs attached to? This sounds like possibly a network problem.
 
Where are you copying these files to and from? Sounds like it could also be a write/memory caching thing, whereas the file is being read to memory, filling your available RAM, then swapping, which is further exacerbated by the fact that it's a virtual machine, which may multiply the problem.

If you have a esx 3.5 all UPD?
You try to copy from your pc to the windows server 2k3 situated in esx 3.5.
If the file are 2Gb the copy don't have problem.
If the file are 6 or more Gb, you see that you transfer rate go up and down and the time for the copy are unusually.
The sincerily copy can are 32Gb. For 32gb the time extimated and really is 1h45min. More More More.

no there isn't a switch port.
I have try with more server and more switch (HP, 3Com), but the problem persist.

Today I have install ESX 4.0 vSfere.
The problem persist!!!
If you have a ESX 4.0, you try copy from PC to Virtualized Servers and after 1 minute, your copy is slow.

I'm pretty sure we can safely say it's your network fabric. None of my testing has shown this on any version of ESX.
 
Check duplex settings on your NICS, and upgrade the firmware and drivers on all your NIC's.
