ESX 4.0 usb drive passthrough

Hi I we have old 4.0 esx server, can I passthrough a usb device to a vm, without restarting the machine. I know in 4.1 I could just add usb device in the add hardware but it does not seem to work in 4.0. I think I may need to add to passthrough the usb controller restart and add the usb drive?

I don't know about 4.0, but in 5.5 you have to make the device available for passthrough operation then reboot the host. After that then you can add it to a VM.

that's not for USB passthrough.

I don't honestly remember if 4.0 OFFERED that... it's been a very very long time.
