When I am working in my computer, do I really need to worry about grounding myself? I mean I built my computer on a carpet, and wearing socks, without being grounded, and had no issues with it.

Also, I care about my case and how it looks, and I usually put a plastic bag or towel under my case to prevent it from getting scratched. Do I have to worry about ESD with this?

thanks

I installed a new HD in my computer today and I swear I zapped my computer
about 20 times, and a few times i could see the spark:eek: A couple of times I hit
the HDs and another time I hit the ram and my video card. I kept forgetting to touch
my computer's case before touching any hardware (oops). However despite my
negligence nothing was damaged.

You should at least touch something that is grounded before working on any computer equipment just to be safe, a good way to do that is to touch a metal part of your case while it is plugged into a grounded outlet.

A towel under your case isn't going to hurt anything.

Beter safe than sorry, but I do admit I don't follow that piece of advice very well. But, I've never fried anything by ESD.

ok cool, this is good to know. Thanks

Yeah, just touch the inside of the case before you touch hardware -- the effort used is very easily worth saving the trouble of an RMA or putting your hand through the wall.

it doesnt even need to be plugged in if its big enough

I always use 'Static Guard' sprayed about 5 feet out from the computer desk and the chair when the humidity is low. Even if I shuffle over the carpet, the area around the computer desk is a dampner against any built up charge I might collect. It's a cheap investment for a lot of protection...doesn't hurt to spray your car seats either
