eSATA - how does it work?

Got a new motherboard recently (Asus P5WD2-E Premium) and noticed an eSATA port (external SATA, duh! hehe) on the outside. My question... how can I use it? I know I could purchase an external SATA enclosure, but is there any other way? The standard SATA cables don't seem to fit in there, but it would be nice if it was possible to format/transfer stuff from HDs externally rather than plugging them into my case first. And without purchasing an enclosure :p Pipe dream, I know, but I thought I'd get input to see if anyone knew any other options :D
 
I believe that there is a store that sells lots of sata accessories, even stuff that is (currently) more exotic:

You will likely need an enclosure, but I have little experience. Have a look at what cables they sell and maybe you can find something that converts it for you.

edit2: this place doesn't really have great prices, just FYI. You may be able to find stuff elsewhere for cheaper.
 
I can get that cable on Ebay for pretty cheap... however, it's only for enclosures. I guess I'd need a cable that converts an internal SATA connector to an external to try what I'd want to try, but I doubt they exist :p
