Error while trying to install windows

I'm not too sure what the problem is, I've been needing to reinstall Windows XP for quite a while, so I finally did it.


Reformated 100% and got to the "Install windows" screen (step 4?) and I get this error.

Error: Installation Failed:

The parameter is incorrect.

Fatal Error: One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. The parameter is incorrect.


Ive tryed installing windows on both a used and brand new hard drive. Both get the same error.
I'm not sure what this error means or how to fix it. I'm hoping it has to do with the installation CD but i'm not sure.

Any help is apprectiated.

is the xp disc really old or scratched?

No it's not scratched at all.

It's not the retail disc so thats why I was thinking that could be the problem, i'll try and find my old disc and reinstall windows with it

If it is a not the XP disc can you try another optical disc drive?

One way to eliminate whether it's the disc or not, since you obviously have a working PC somewhere, put the disc in and try to access the path laid out in error message. If you can happily copy that file across, then you can be *fairly* certain it's not a disc read error.


If you can copy the file, it's an incompatability with your optical drive, try and grab another cheap one from somewhere (ideally IDE), at worst you're talking about £15-£20 so it's not that much of an issue.
