Error when installing XP Pro

My friends computer was randomly restarting and it continually got worse and worse so we went and formated the hard drive and began a fresh install of XP Pro. During the Installation it gives this error and then the computer shuts down.

It is the always fun blue screen of death and it reads..

A problem has been detected and blah blah blah.

PFN_LIST CORRUPT

It seems to be saying that there are corrupted files on the disc. That's just a guess, but where else would there be "CORRUPTION?"

Maybe try a different disc (same license, though).
 
I had a CDRom drive that was reading a disk incorrectly during the setup one time.

It worked perfectly after the OS had installed but I had to temporarily use a different drive during the setup due to problems like you are describing.

Just a thought.
 
PFN refers to the memory management page file number, basically the memory chips have had it, run a memory tester (you can download LinuxOS Floppy Disk with a memory tester, this will tell you for sure, and also which chips are dead.

But definitly some of the memory has had it, not the HDD
