Error when I unpack files

When i unpack a large quantity of files, around 20 40mb files or more, most of the time I get an error say the files are corrupt. It isnt something wrong with the files though since maybe 2 times out of 10 I can unpack the files without an error.

Is this a malfunction with the harddrive or perhaps something else in the system?
I have exchanged everything in the system except the videocard and the powersupply and the problem still remains.
Have formatted the HD atleast five times...
Using winxp.

Any ideas?

scandisk the harddrive. Also do a memtest. I had a similiar problem with a game install that happened while it was unpacking files. Turned out to be bad memory, but I wouldn't have known because the bad memory was up around the 955MB region.

Another vote for a Memtest86+ run. XP caches files going and coming to the hard drive, and a flakey memory bit or two can really hose up the works. Seen this exact thing before......

I have tried to underclock the cpu and suddenly it works without a problem.
Its when I use the cpu at the default speed, in this case a barton xp3000 that I get the errors.
I have also tried a athlon xp2000 and the same thing happens. When it's a default speed at 2000 i get error when i unpack and in games but when I underclock the cpu the problem goes away. I have also tried 3 different memory modules and the problem still remains.
The only thing I havent changed is the graphic card and the powersupply.

Anyone have any ideas where the fault could be?

Have you tried a different program like WinRAR, WinZip or PowerArchiver? Have you tried reinstalling the current one you are using?
