Error Loading OS

I just installed Win XP Home (upgrade version) over a previous installation of Win XP Pro. Installation went well, I did a quick format as the drive was already NTFS, and the computer boots fine . . . Except If I remove the Windows XP CD from the cd drive, or try changing the boot order to HDD first. If I do either I get the 'Error Loading OS' error. I suspect that I should have done a full format instead of the quick format. I'm hoping to avoid reinstalling again, does anybody have a suggestion?

Your not making a lot of sense here, unless I'm missing something.

You stated your installed XP Home over Pro, then you mentioned doing a full format. That's an either or...not a both type of situation. Either way, it seems as though your drive didn't get the bootable part right. You can try a repair install by booting off your CD and choosing repair. The steps you took haven't been clearly detailed, so it's hard to pinpoint what went wrong.

Quick format assumes the drive is physically fine. Full format takes more time because it checks the drive. The differ in no way in terms of the resulting drive.

just start over from the begining and do a full format NTFS. If its a huge drive I suggest you partition it if you dont have a secondary storage drive.

The machine already had XP Pro installed on it. I needed the XP Pro for another machine, so I got an XP home upgrade version to install on this machine. I booted from the XP home CD and installed XP home to the same drive which had XP Pro on it. I did a quick format instead of the regular format (which takes like 30 minutes). Now the machine boots only if the CD ROM is the first boot device, and the windows XP Home CD is in the drive. If I remove the drive, or change the boot priority I get the "Error Loading OS" error.

I dont think this is going to work.. when you load the upgrade it'll ask for a previous version disk to verify and having xp pro on the machine cant help, also when it asked for the "previous" disk , what did you use? you cant use the Xppro disk to "upgrade a downgrade to home" if that makes sense.. Also for what you paid for the retail upgrade you could have bought a full oem copy of xp home anyways..

That's what is weird. I did not get propmted for a "previous" disk. It just performed the install. That is why I think I should have done a complete format first.

Yeah, I know and it is killing me. I was kind of in a pinch for time. I am upgrading my HTPC, I started it Saturday Afternoon, and it had to be up and running by Sunday night, so I had to run out Saturday night and buy the retail upgrade.

The reason it didnt ask for the disk is most likely because it detected another OS on the machine.. The problem is occuring because your trying to downgrade xp pro to home using an upgrade,, its causing conflicts... but if you reformat and unstall the update it'll ask you for a previous version disk ( because its not on the HD any longer) but I really doubt you can put you oriignal xppro disk in and it'll work. even if it does it not legal anyways, since you dont a legal copy to upgrade from anyways, but if it installs and MS activates you then, who am I to care

I actually do have a legit copy if Win 98 to insert if prompted, I was just never prompted.

because there was already an os on the drive.. it only prompts if it cant find one.. format and boot the upgrade and then stick the 98 disc in when prompted. you should be fine
