Alright, i recently got a new hard drive that is bigger then my old one, and i want to copy all my old stuff over without having to reinstall. I went and ran Data Lifeguard(they are both western digital drives) and everything went smoothly. But when i turned the computer off, unplugged the old drive, and had just the new one in, it pops up a message saying error loading OS. Any ideas?
 
Im not sure about that softeware, but if you really did copy the information from one to another, then your also going to have to write to the boot sector of the hdd. Pull out your XP cd and repair the installation (do you know how?). It has a command to do that.

edit- Ive never tried this, I always do a fresh install. But my boot shit has messed up before, its fairly easy to repair.
 
I don't have my xp cd on me, are the setup files stored on the Hard drive anywhere?
 
a cheaper/easier alternative might be to go buy ghost. the home edition sucks but it's only $20-30 (i think) depending where you look. i wouldn't suggest using this for backups, but for disk-disk stuff, it's fine. it'll copy over the registry, etc. not sure about the boot sector, but if you set it 'active' in disk manager, it should work, and you can always debug from the old drive... i've used ghost to back up my machine while reinstalling windows a couple times. make sure you write down the serial number from when you back up, you need it to restore and it keeps changing.
 
Wow...I get the exact same message. I don't know of a solution to fix it. Even with a fresh install, I get that message or my system does not do anything.
 
Sounds like it's looking for your OS files in the wrong IDE channel.

If your Old drive was primary master, you'll want to make sure your new drive is also primary master.
 
Well i got it working, I guess my original clone was done wrong. After i did the clone using lifegaurd it told me to shut the computer off, and turn it on using the new drive as the boot, then it would complete setup, well, when i did that, i always got the stupid error message. So i redid the clone, and instead this time didn't do what it said, and just rebooted the computer, it finished the setup, then i shut it off, did the switch, and it worked! Except now some of my settings are all screwed, same with icons, I had to reinstall Office 2003, and Acrobat reader, and now my msn won't keep most the settings i tell it to, but meh, i got space on my hard drive now.
