My linux learning machine took a dump on me today. 60GB Maxtor IDE on a old Soyo Dragon Plus 1900XP system. Anyways I go to reload linspire (don't laugh everyone has to start somewhere) and it reloads fine but when actually starting the OS it hangs. I tried next to load XP formatted the drive and setup went flawless. Now when I try to start up I get the message "Error loading operating system". I cleared the cmos and reset everything to default and BIOS detects the hard drive fine. S.M.A.R.T. has always been enabled and never reported any problems. I've been playing with computers for over 10 years and this is the first time I ever seen or heard of this. ideals?

I got a friend with western digital 40gig drive that does the same thing. Copy files over to the drive with no problem, just wont boot off it. Tested on multiple computers. He just decided to send the drive in, RMA.

You did mark the OS partition as active (bootable), didn't you?

I know what your saying but XP never ask you to do that and neither does linspire. Funny thing is I had the machine shut off for several hours. I started it up and forgot I had the linspire disk in. Linspire started it's install processes so I went ahead and went though the setup. Rebooted and everything started working fine. Odd nothing was done different but now it works. I've rebooted it a few time and it's working like a champ. I just hope the drive isn't being targeted by the reaper.
