Im looking at getting a photo printer for my parents for xmas. Looking for something that will print good quality pics and be easy at doing it. Ive narrowed my choices (mostly based on price/performance). I was looking at the Epson Stylus Picturemate and the Canon IP4000. Im kinda leaning towards the Epson due to the fact that its small and would store easily and from what ive read has pretty good prints. But I like the fact that the Canon does the same but with cheap ink. They can both be had for about the same price, so can anyone give me a reason to lean one direction or the other? Experience? Have one? Thoughts?

Thanks for the help

I have the Epson and I freakin' *love* this printer! I can't tell my prints from the photo lab prints we get back from the store, and its completely portable. I've had it since April, and have probably printed at least 150 pictures with it - no problems or issues at all. Also, I seem to get between 90-110 pictures from one ink cartridge (all six colors in one). You can buy the replacement pack that has another 100 sheets of 4x6 glossy and the ink cartridge for about $30. Of course, ink use depends on the types of photos you print.

I don't have any experience with the other one you mentioned, but after buying this Epson, I was impressed enough with it to go out and buy the Epson R320 photo printer as well for my 8x10 shots. Another fantastic product as well...

Good luck in your choice, and let us know what your results are. :)

I have had the canon IP4000 for a year now. nothing but perfect prints from this machine. the best part is the cheap ink 15 bucks to newegg gets you all 5 cartridges .
oops it seems they dropped the price to 12.99 yahooo!

5 pak cartridges

Between the Picturemate and the iP4000, it's no contest. The Canon is far better.

Epsons are great printers, but I would prob pic the Canon...

I have a Cannon iP3000...I love it!

In my experience, Cannons have been better printers.

How's that ink working for ya? I have a Canon i850 and i860, and the 860 uses the same cartidges. I've never used anything but Canon ink in them, but for under $20 for the set, it's tempting.

On topic, I got an i850 for my dad a few years ago. It still prints awesome. Got my fiancee a refurbed i860, and its great. Got an ip4000 for work, as well as recommended them to both my brothers, and they are solid machines. I used to work retail and had my hands on a lot of different printers, and I've never been impressed with Epson or Lexmark.

been through about 4 sets of these generics now without a problem at all.

Saw an ad today for the Canon IP6000D for 99 bux...would anyone say that is better than the IP4000? or is the only difference the LCD screen?

Seems like Canon is the concensus in here. Will that Canon printer work as a stand alone printer? meaning i dont have to connect a computer to it to use it?

The iP6000D is better as a stand alone printer than the iP4000 because of the LCD screen. If that's your intended purpose then I'd recommend you spend the extra for the iP6000D. In terms of image quality, they are nearly the same.

I think that's slightly out of his price range. :p

I'd get a Canon i9900 over that anyway.
