I feel like a n00b. I remember when John Gildred's Indrema project went flatline years ago, but the flame lived on for the idea of a Linux-based game console that would be open to anyone to develop for. The underpowered Xgamestation Micro was released, but the target market is... small.
The EPIA boards are perfect for this kind of thing. They're pretty powerful, the graphics aren't bad, they have integrated networking, NTSC/PAL video output, decent audio with 5.1ch digital on many, low energy consumption, capacity for a lot of RAM, ability/necessity of having a hard drive, and PCI slots on most for the possible addition of a display adapter solution with T&L.
This could be a cool thing and with the C7 coming up, that's a lot more CPU power available.
It may just be the Oxycontin talking (hernia surgery), but this could be just the ticket. Sony's Linux kits were popular, but limited in number. VIA's EPIA's are popular, cheap and wouldn't be subjected to the same tyrannical terms as the Sony solution. Hell, it may even be marketable.
It sure would be fun, though. I could play homebrew games for hours, personally. Reviving 2D gaming would be a huge bonus. Especially after seeing that "What if?" Flash trailer for the fictional Maddox game.
