I just picked up this northbridge cooler which is the low profile version. The only posts i can find for it people are using it for the southbridge and not for the northbridge which began to raise some concerns. Does anyone here have the low profile on there NB? I have the 580x chipset from AMD and it will also be actively cooled due to my Enzo Extreme-X i am installing so i was thinking it would be fine. Plus the orig heatsink is not really tight right now, made from aluminum, and uses cheap thermal paste so this should be an upgrade. If you got an S1L let me know. thanks.

Here are the two options by the way:

S1L still weighs 50g!

I have a similar question. I want to use the CNB-S1L on my Asus P5E-VM HDMI's northbridge, but not sure if it's good enough for the northbridge.

I'm using the tall version. My NB voltage is set to 1.51V. My Ultima 90 is pulling air from near that area, so while there's no direct fan blowing on it, it does get somewhat of a 'breeze'. Loading up Prime, my NB gets to about 54C and idles at about 47C. This is externally monitored with a thermister so actually temps are probably higher. There's a cold front here, so my house is at 69F whereas it's normally 76F.

I would not feel comfortable with the shorty unless it were actively cooled. Enzotech makes a version of the shorty with fan mounts.

The reason I need the short version is so that I can put a PCIe 1x card in the top slot. I wouldn't be able to put a fan on the CNB-S1L. I do have two 120mm intake fans blowing air over the NB area though. It's a SilverStone SG03 with two 120mm intake fans in the front of the case.

I think a better solution would to be to buy the tall boy and cut the pins that may interfere with your PCI-E card. It really looks like it would clear without having to cut anything, but at most you have to cut maybe 3 row of pins (6 pins).

How do you cut the pins? Would wire cutters work? Also, how does the taller version of the CNB-S1L compare to a Thermalright HR-05?

You could use a dremel, hacksaw, or even side cutters. Unfortunately there are no reviews of the Enzotech vs the HR-05. My guess is that the HR-05 would do a better job passively. I don't know about actively cooled.
