The thread title kind of says it...I've been looking into upgrading from CDR to DVDR but there are a few things I'd like to ask you guys about first. Media-writing devices really aren't my forte.

Is there one particular brand that is more reliable than the others? I don't need top-of-the-line and blazing fast; I just need something that works reliably.
 
Ive had multiple sony CDRW and DVDRW drives over the years. I am quite tired of their finicky behaviour and am simply not getting another. To be blunt, they get warm and they start puking up dasta errors. I'm quite sick of it. I'm going with an NEC very soon. If I wasn't, I would be going with a toshiba. Both very inexpensive and quite good reviews, and ive had very good experience with toshiba ROM drives in the past.
 
I've got this NEC burner, and it rocks. Burned a spindle of DVD's without a coaster. I have two buddies that bought the same drive, and are getting the same results. The LiteON's are probably quite good as well, but this was recommended by a buddy that's really into the home theater thing, and it appears that he was right - it's a dandy.

That's the one I was actually thinking about going with. I read the reviews and it sounds solid, but I simply hadn't heard of NEC up until now. They sound like a good brand.

NEC rules with their monitors and drives. I have one of their NEC monitors-- 22" pure. :) <3...

They're a good company but on an off topic case, they aren't a good company when it comes to environmental issues.

Ok...I went with the NEC ND-3500A (OEM). No software came with it. Now I have a problem.

I've got the drive in, and went to the device manager.

1: The CD-ROM drive that I have in the system no longer appears in the device manager.

2: The DVD/CDROM device that it lists is an AXV CD/DVDROM SCSI device.

Furthermore, when I put a disk in the DVDROM drive, it said there was no media.
 
NEC, Pioneer, sony or liteon. You cannot go wrong with any of those brands..
