I have some upgrading to do and want to see what is the world of enterprise SSD's like these days..

Is Intel and Seagate the main ones?

I was told that you cant use your standard desktop SSD's in servers due to the increase read /writes that servers tend to have..

Is this true?

I know you can use standard SATA drives from say Hitachi in server's if you so wished.. obviously with less warranty, MTF and so on..

for SSD's for an application server and a database server, what should i be looking at?

is raid10 still prefered for a database even with SSD's or can one move to raid 6 due to the increase speed and seek times?

that is a good read, i like the idea of only partitioning some of the drive to keep more NAND free to be used for replacement thus extending the life considerably..

My first question will be what you consider enterprise SSD's. SAS or SATA? SLC or MLC? URE's of 10^16/10^17. For us, when we source "enterprise" SSD's it depends on the needs of that particular box. If they are extremely write-heavy workloads (dozens to hundreds of gigs a day) they are SAS and SLC. Lately, we have standardized on the Toshiba MK4001GRZB 400GB drives for whitebox/upgrades and the HP 400GB SAS SLC drives for new purchases in Proliants. They are psychotically expensive, but for the workload they are great.
For general use (bulk storage where SSD's are needed or mirrored pairs in general use) we have standardized on both the Samsung 830 and the Intel 520 in SATA.
 
I would cut off my hand before I put an OCZ Enterprise Drive into one of my servers :D

We use intel 520's now and plan to migrate them to user drives after a year of service and keep a constant rotation. No idea what we'll use next year but it'll never be ocz.
 
OCZ has different definitions of certain words that other companies also use. Honesty, reliability, trustworthiness and stability to name a few. I shudder to hear what they ship as "Enterprise".

We are going to be doing database at some point , we have about a 400G MSSQL database system split across several servers and i would love to consolidate and replicate.

Currently setting up some monitoring systems to get a real idea of I/O right now on specific servers.

If you are looking at MS SQL acceleration, you should also take a serious look at the Intel 910. We are using some of the 800GB models on Sharepoint/MSSQL/IIS boxes and the stats (for these particular avenues) are impressive.
 
I wish I could buy an SSD that made damn developers spend a few minutes actually optimizing their queries so every time someone runs a report the entire server doesn't slow to a crawl.

While the plextor speed is impressive, I'm not putting a new brand and unfamiliar controllers in servers for at least another year. I might try some in desktops.
 
It's easy to buy new hardware. It's hard (impossible?) to turn crappy developers into good ones. It's even harder to fire them.

Ha! Been there. Try to bring a new programmer in and as soon as he sees the terrible mess of code the current guy has, he bolts.

I can't help with your developer problems. If you can't fix that problem, at least I can help with the hardware :) That said, I have been in your shoes in the past with developer issues.

really this is only part of the problem. take sharepoint and or exchange as examples. you don't need anything other than normal server class hardware for these services ...

.... until you try to deploy them into multi thousand seat environments. this isn't a developer problem this is a size/scope problem that you have to throw hardware at.

thankfully the last great bottleneck, mass storage, is now no longer 'really' a bottleneck. no need to short stroke 200 15k drives just to attain the IO requirements etc. raw SSD and or intelligent caching via hybrid storage pooling solves a LOT of problems.
 
According to Tom's Hardware, there really isn't a difference between Enterprise and Consumer-level SSDs. There was an article about this a year or so ago, and I've shared that link a few times with some people. Unfortunately I can't find it through Googling, and I've recently reinstalled my browser so I've lost my gigantic browsing history.

While I'd normally say tom's is not a reliable source... I've never thought that there was much difference between high end consumer and enterprise drives beyond TLER and the warranty.
 
sure there is. enterprise drives use SAS interfaces. consumer drives use sata. interposers are NOT the same thing as SAS btw.

in terms of the actual flash ... probably not that much difference between most of the drives. however the controllers and firmware have massive differences. a STEC controller is not the same as a sandforce controller.

Correct. I should have been more clear. I don't see a lot of difference between 'enterprise' classed SATA drives and high end 'consumer' SATA drives.
