Enterprise grade SATA drives?

I know SCSI is still the drive of choice for enterprise applications, but I've already got this awesome Adaptec SATA RAID contoller. What kind of drives would be good to put eight of them in RAID-5 for a for file server.

I should probably mention that the controller is SATA-150. Can I put SATA-300 drives on it and they run at reduced speed?
 
Yes. And they won't run at reduced speed, because no single harddisk is fast enough to bring SATA1 to the limit, even when they are so called SATA2 harddisks. So all SATA HDs will work, SATA2 is downwards compatible.

Great. What drives do you suggest? I don't know what any of these marketing terms mean when going through all the "RAID ready" drives out there.
 
Probably the best SATA drives right now are the 150GB Western Digital Raptor Enterprise. 10000 rmp. 4.6 ms access time. I have 2 of them, but not in Raid, because they are fast as hell anyway. But quite expensive, I admit.

But for a file server, you'd rather go for size, not speed. There are some good and cheap 300 GB SATA drives out there, 8 of them in Raid5 ... that would be 2.1 Terrabyte. Well, maybe 1.95 after a format.

My 2nd file server at home as 4x300 GB in Software Raid 5 and even that is fast enough for streaming video.
 
i would get the seagate 7200.10 320G drives, they are going for ab out $100 or so now, one of the best price per G drives around, and dam fast when put into raid.
 
WD 400 RE2 are pretty good. I am not a fan of Seagates Near Line series mostly due reduced performance of them compared to the standard version. I have had much experience with the Maxtor MaxLine products.
 
So you guys suggest the Western Digital RE2, Seagate Barracude Perpendicular Recording, or the Maxtor MaxLines?

What makes a "RAID" hard drive better than a regular old desktop hard drive?
 
Actrually if you are looking at a file server for work, look at actual enterprise drives.

Each of the MFGs make them, and they are rated for such use. (ususally not much physical difference between them and the desktop ones, but they do have better support - longer warranties)

Hitachi and Fujitsu have SAS but not SATA drives so those won't work for you.
