Enough with the short games

Picked up COD3 and GoW today, and despite their incredible incredibleness, I am still extremely disappointed with the length of these games. I have played around 2 hrs for both these games, and I cannot comprehend why I am 1/5 of the way through the games.

I thought that the 360 wouldnt only offer superior graphics, but also a heightened story. Now we have 10 hour games with nice visuals, but no depth. 60 bucks doesnt cover the cost of graphics, IMHO.

10~12 hours is enough for these kinds of games. I am sure designers could have made it longer, but at the risk of screwing up the pace of the game.

Doom at 20 hours....zzzzzz

Are you playing Gears of War on pansy mode ? That would explain why you're blowing through it.

Man up.

I would much rather play through a solid 10 hours than 20 so-so hours. I have a much higher percentage of games I haven't finished than those that I have finished. Maybe my attention span isn't long enough, but 10 hours is fine by me. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was great at only 10 hours.

I think I'm the same way... maybe it's cos I work for a living but I like my games to be short and AWESOME for every minute. Don't get me wrong, I do still like the epics... but I never seem to have time to finish them any more. :(

10-12 i think is the sweet spot for action games. 8 (prey) is pushing it. RPGs obviously I want longer

im all for snes level graphics with longer gameplay. (yes, really)

all the reviews say if you play GoW on hard settings the game is alot longer.

I finished Prey in 5:30, almost exactly. Pretty sorry if you ask me.

Looking at my collection of SNES games (about 100), they range from one to 11 hours, minus the RPG's.

If I play them now, it will be less because my skill has increased.

Exactly how long do people expect games to be? I dont think I've ever played a straight up action game that was longer than 10-12 hours.

It's almost like hourly length is starting to be compared like certain other "lengths"...

I think it was the Gears of War producer that said, give me a solid 6 hour game for $20, people would be lining up out of the door to buy it.

So your paying what, 5$ an hour? That isn't even counting the countless mulitplayer hours. When was the last time you saw a movie...because your paying about 5$ an hour for that...and that isn't interactive.

People should stop judging games based upon length, especially when there is decent multiplayer.

For FPS's, I like having 12 solid, fun hours of play instead of 20 "OMFG THIS GAME IS HARD!" hours. It's about fun, and being beaten down senseless over and over isn't fun for me. Of course, I'm not a masochist like most FPS players seem to be.

For RPG's (JRPG's are my FAVORITE genre) I want a longer game, because the stories of those games are generally fleshed out a bit more than any FPS (Half-life 2 almost being an exception :D ). I'm 8 hours into GoW, and I'm fairly glad. While the gameplay is awesome, it gets a bit repetitive, and the story is quite predictable, though interesting enough to keep me focused (IMHO, though, nothing compared to FFXII).

I know I started to get incomprehensible there, but do you understand?

No, it was GoW's designer who said that. ;)

I agree with everyone else who's been saying that they find a fun, 10 hour game more enjoyable than a repetitive, boring, 20+ hour game.

There is more to shooters and action games than just the single-player experience. Multiplayer plays a massive role in these types of games.

why not have a game that is 50 hours and really fun?
Because it will get boring after the 20th hour, no matter how "fun" it was. And it's damn near impossible to keep the story up/introduce cool things for 50 hours.

All of my games can be finished in one day (minus MMO's/RTS/RPG's), I like to keep it that way.

If RE:4, GoW or Shadow of the Colossus were 50 hours long, I'd have gotten bored and stopped playing.

I spent well over 40 hours playing LoZ:OoT the first time through, and I thought it was fun [almost] the whole time. The same goes for FFVII/FFVI/etc. They just had [to me] really good stories, and I'm glad they were that long. Games like Enchanted Arms, though, ended after about 30 hours, which was plenty long enough in my eye. There wasn't enough material to keep it going for 50 hours plus. If someone sees a FPS that can keep introducing characters and story elements to make it entertaining for more than 15 hours, please tell me, because I haven't seen one yet.

It seems games, as of late, are shorter because development time is spent on graphics and same-old tried-and-true gameplay. Every once in a while, a game like Katamari comes along and breaks the mold (graphics weren't "AWESOME", but gameplay more than made up for it), but those are few and far between. Gears of War and Chronicles of Riddick are/were really fun, but I can't see myself spending more than four hours in addition to my 8 hours I've put into GoW already.

anybody remember baldurs gate 2? That thing was fukkin LOOOONG. took me a few MONTHS to beat it, and i played it alot. I love long games.

With all this new "episodic" crap its like they are usnig it as an excuse to relese short stuff. Remember sin episodes? it was like 3 hours long? well....where are the rest of the episodes now? So much for "shorter divelopment time".

what the fuck is a JRPG? I keep seeing this used, and I've never seen the term before.

@tskiller - Wasn't that game a dungeon crawler/rpg? So I hope it was longer than 15 hours and lasted for months.

As for episodic games, it's just to draw more $$. The reason they come about is because most of the time some suit makes the developers do it. Pay up to $60 for a full game, or $100 for all the "episodes". If the game was designed that was and priced in a way that fair to consumers, I'm all for it.

I agree in terms of $'s spent...but seriously, by the end of Prey I was tired of it. In fact, it felt like it should have ended earlier as the final 2 objectives were tacked on.
I don't mind games that are shorter, but I think it's annoying that games almost always HAVE to be released at a certain pricepoint. A game like Prey should be $10 cheaper than it was. Word got around that it was short and easy and now nobody wants it. It'll be in the bargain bin any day and it STILL won't make as much money as it would've at $40 brand new.
It's a little bit of an argument for the whole "episode" games people are trying. Right now I think those are WAY to short to pay 1/2 price for a full game, but why can't a team make a full game that's a LITTLE shorter and sell it at 75% normal price? Sin and HL2:E1 were both 3-4 hours each...but is that worth 1/2 the price of the retail HL2? No way. What if they combines Episode 1 and 2 and sold 'em for $30? That seems like a good deal to me.

Japanese-style RPGs, as compared to Western RPGs like Oblivion, NWN, KOTOR, etc.

Game length for me is not the end all be all indicator of game awesomeness, and I think it's mostly genre-specific. The Metal Slug series lasts about 35-40 minutes per game, but it's an arcade shooter and it's damn fun.

Resident Evil 4 is all of 5 - 7 hours, but it's so fun and good, it's the perfect length for me to go back and actually replay it.

but you can play MS so many times and it doesn't get old, especially with a friend.

I need to play some of the RE games... I just don't do well getting scared :-p

My girlfriend and I are playing BG2 on PS2...long enough..We're getting bored FAST and I don't think we are even halfway done.

RE4 is only 5-7 hours? My first trip through was about 3X that :p
Granted now that I've got the Hand Cannon, Endless Launcher, and Chicago Typewriter I can make it through in 4...but for a normal player going through on the first try I'd say it's closer to 12 on the low end.

Different game. Baldur's Gate on the consoles is closer to Diablo. The one on the PC is an RPG with actually a lot of strategic elements.
The one on the PC is one of the best games of all time, while the console one's so-so, but fun to play.

Really? I kept remember everyone saying it was 20 hours long. Pretty much what kept me away from it :)

Then don't play Silent Hill.

I would actually recommend not playing RE 1-3 first, I found those kind of lame because of the movement since your chars walk like tanks, ammo deficiency (survive and conserve), and they have a stupid save system.

RE4 made the series more actiony, made the atmosphere more cool, improved the gunplay and the control schemes, and did away with stupid ink ribbons. It's not as 'scary' as the other games in the series though, at least I didn't think so, and I'm usually kind of a wuss with horror games (though not horror movies). :D

First time I played through RE4 it took about 7.5 hours. I did spend considerably more time playing the game thanks to the unlocked minigame modes.

Yea I know. I have both (but playing the console versions with my gf). He didn't make it clear though which BG he's talking about.

Yeah...one of my friends has been playing it FOREVER. And the gamespot review says this:
Gamespot said:
All told, there's a great variety of excellent weapons in the game, which helps keep the action feeling fresh for the solid 25-or-so hours it takes to reach the end of the story.

I think it's the perfect length for that particular game. 25 hours, and it stays fun the whole time.
