By comparison, to enable the full DIRECTX 9 experience, McTaggart suggested the following system: 3.6GHZ P4 CPU or AMD Athlon 64 FX-53, 2GB RAM (yes, he actually wants you to have 2GB RAM - I'm not making this up), and an ATI X800 XT 256MB video card.
arentol said:If you've seen the movie they have out for HL2 with the guy inside a buildings attic and the whole HDR thing they had going on in that attic part of the scene as well as when he goes outside and the sun reflects off flagstones and then they show an alien creature with this incredible reflective exoskeleton....
That is the kind of stuff you WON'T be able to do (while playing) on anything but an ungodly PC (and you may have to wait another year to be able to buy that PC anyway).
Shzitt said:You will be able to play it, just not with all the eye candy turned on. Kind of like a fat free version of the game.
GummyBear said:im on a althonxp 2800+
512 ddr ram(gonna add another stick of 512 once HL2 gets close to release)
im plannin on gettin a 6600 GT around the time of the release. right now i got a g4mx440when will the agp ver of the 6600 GT come out btw?

hopefully i can use most of the settings. not lookin for hardcore max settings. just everything on but not fancy. would this all be good enuff?
independantvariable said:Your computer will do FINE stop listing to the propaganda. Trust me spending the 500 dollars on a stupid whatever to see some direct x effects is just NOT reasonable. Maybe in a year you will need to upgrade but I wouldnt worry.
Shzitt said:Under 100Only if he is able to use the same board he has.
CastleBravo said:Well, McTaggart is talking out of his ass. Anybody can get a copy of the Source Engine Stress Test (easy way: pre-order HL2 through Steam) to see how well their system can handle the game. Notice that it is called a "stress test," not an "easy test that any crap system can pass." Valve released the test for the precise purpose of letting you find out how well your hardware can handle the HL2 engine (since the Source engine is the HL2 engine, of course).
The result? On a P4 3.2E/1GB PC3200/Geforce 6800 GT system I got 106 FPS at 1280x1024 4xAA 8xAF and maximum detail settings.

I'd suggest people stop and grow a brain. Are Valve going to make a game that nobody has the hardware to play? To quote the sages of our time, "bitch, please!"
To conclude: the insane hardware requirement claims for HL2 are bullshit, just like the insane hardware requirement rumors for Doom 3 that said you'd need a 6800 Ultra and a P4EE and 2 GB of RAM just to load it.![]()
Shzitt said:True, but for roughly 300 he could get a new winchestor core and mobo.
lithium726 said:i think if he had 300 he wouldnt be hoping his system could run the game![]()
And you need 2 gigs of RAM just to run that bloated pile of shit Steam
