After floating aroud the web and hearing horror stories about x800s dying left and right There was one thing in common most users had a enermax PSU. And a Day ago my brother had and enermax 550 and got a x800 pro and it died first thing. It gets "connect power cord" issue which means its dead :( Just sending out a friendly warning sorry if its a repost.

keep in mind this happens in in other PSU as well but enermax is most common

and most of these people have not overclocked or flashed.

Just got the card back installed it on my system worked flawlessly. Put it in his machine ran 3d mark 2003 and same thing happend. "Power cable unpluged" He got pissed and called them and thery are saying that is it either the mobos fault or the PSU companys fault. He called the other two companys and they are saying the same thing " It must be the other harware" total screwed. He RMA though bestbuy and going to buy a new PSU.
 
LOL, I love Enermax PSUs though. I guess that means I can go with ATI right now. Any ideas why Enermax PSUs kill? I remember that Asus's MBs use to have problems with Antec PSUs but I never knew why.
 
some people say it could also have something to do with abit mobos not sure tho. :confused:
 
:eek: Um, I have that PSU, but I'm glad I didn't wait for the X880. Hopefully, I won't have any problems with it in my new system (....crosses fingers, toes and eyebrows.... ;) ).
 
how odd. i remember back when Enermax PSUs and Epox motherboards didn't get along. i wonder what is going on.

Yes, that's exactly what happened to my BBA X800 Pro.

Enermax 460W PSU
MSI K8N Neo Platinum

It died with that message "YOUR CABLE IS NOT PLUGGED INTO YOUR VIDEO CARD, PLEASE RTFM" or something like that.

I've already RMA'd my BBA X800 Pro - i'm sure it'll take a month or 2 to get back to me.

I've already got a 6800U and I'm dooming away :D

Not waiting for the X800 Pro replacement - i'll eBay it if it ever gets back to me.

Have had no problem with mine so far. I have an enermax 350 and an abit motherboard. Heres hoping....
 
I JUST GOT MY X800 PRO REPLACEMENT FROM ATI - IT TOOK ABOUT 1 WEEK :D

So now I have a X800 Pro and a 6800 Ultra.

I wouldn't be surprised, it's the case of the "VIA soundblaster live" issues..


It'll pass in time and ATI will take the hit, just like VIA took the hit with the whole "creative incompatibility".

ATI is obviously at fault for not doing their "quality testing" on such a 'high-end' component. Do they have Enermax in Canada?

I don't think ANYTHING has problems with pc power and cooling psu's....which is why I bought one :D :p
 
whats the problem with the aspire?
I saw a review that compared it electrically to a PCP&C supply, and I bought because of its 34a 12V rail.
Seems to be holding up in my heavily oc'd system with 3 hds and 6 case fans....
I am quite stable....

I would prefer a company spend on performance and not looks however..but for the money this had the fattest 12v amperage.
 
I'm looking more deeply into Aspire right now since you mention it....

Apparantly, some people swear by them while some people that have used them say they are total crap. IIRC I got info from someone that says that some of their supplies are oem'd by the FPS group, which makes EXCELLENT supplies such as fortron, sparkle, etc. Some, however, are made by different, more generic suppliers, who I am still trying to find out about. If you don't mind, maybe you could gimme a hand and list the model number of your supply...or the UL number if its listed. I could run a check and see who that particular one is made by.

BTW I seriously doubt that supply puts out 34amps on the 12v line, as that WOULD be on par with a pcp&c 510 deluxe (and even the FSP group supplies just cant match the pcp&C, even though they come close for a lot more cash). Can I get a linky to the review that compares it to a pcp&c? There may be some nice inside shots with clues to who its made by.

For now, Aspire stays on the list, as it appears that different supplies in their company are made by different manufacturers, and thus to different standards. And some of those standards are pretty damn bad. Eventually I'm looking to rework my sig along with my "before making a thread about buying a psu" sticky into a more detailed faq/guide listing the individual supplies to stay away from...but until then, better safe than sorry for the noobs. :p

its rated at 34a 12v doesnt mean it does it..but it is rated that high...


The results of the three tests were a bit startling. As compared to my cohort’s review of the PC Power and Cooling TurboCool 510W, the tests were nearly spot-on to the Mercedes of power supplies. Even though I was a bit concerned to see the 12V rail a bit high on each test, it is still well within tolerances and was not as high as the TurboCool. Overall, the Aspire 500W Power Supply put a smile on my face, and I came away feeling very impressed.

reading most of the threads linked it looks like its mainly the newer enermax psu's doign this.the noistaker adn coolergiant series. these psu's have 2 +12v rails that have significantly lower curent ratings than the same wattage ea than the older design has. im thinking that maybe if you plug the card into the wrong molex connector you may be getting power from just one of those rails, overloading it and causing it to damage the vid card in some way.
 
this sucks. i have a Enermax 460 and i have never had a problem with it. I was ordering a new video card and decided on the 6800gt instead of the ati card. i also added an Antec 480 "NeoPower" psu just to be safe. I don't know weather to be annoyed with Enermax or ati :confused:
 
I did notice that the "corecenter" MB utility for my MSI K8N Neo Platinum did read about 12.8v instead of 12.0v for my Enermax PSU.

However, I take those readings with a grain of salt, these utlities are notoriously inacurrate. You'll need to use a good multimeter to really test it.

I have a good digital multimeter somewhere.
 
well if a .8 v overspec is killing these cards then ati needs to buck up and pay more than .02 for thier power rec circuitry.
 
Should I worry? I have an older Enermax 430W, but I haven't had any problems yet. I was thinking about getting a FSP 550W.
