I am looking for something that would be like ESXi, Virtual box, and VMWare Player; but isn't any of these. It should be both its own OS and virtualization platform, which could be accessed from the same device it is installed, is highly stable, and has very low overhead.

Anybody know of anything like that?

XenClient
 
XenServer *can* do all of those things. Now, will it do any of that without throwing a bitchfit? totally different question.
 
Are you looking for a Type-1 Hypervisor or a Type-2?

ESXi is a Bare Metal Type 1 Hypervisor where as Player Plus and Virtual Box are Type 2

Yes I am looking for something like XenClient. Which I installed, but it said my hardware is not compatible and it won't boot.

Will Hyper-V run more than just Server 2008?

I run ESXi on three servers and its great, though I am looking for something that I can use right at the system...without having to remote in.
 
Hyper-V 2012/2012 R2 can handle just about anything ESXI can handle. Why not use something like VMWare workstation?

The Hyper-V tole on Win 8.1 runs great. I have a few linux VM's on it for testing. You want either Windows 8.1 Hyper-V or Server 2012R2 Hyper-V

Workstation is pretty awesome, but lately these days I'm wondering if it's almost turning into an antiquated piece of software. Hyper-V has come along way and is pretty fantastic with 8.1/2012R2. As great as it is recently I've been questioning whether it even will have a place in the market in future. Am I the only one kind seeing the end of the road so to speak?

I mainly use it because I can virtualize two ESXi servers on my laptop while on the road. There is no way HyperV is doing that.
