I've used TrueCrypt, wonderful, BTW, in the past to encrypt my whole disk.

My problem is, if my whole disk is encrypted, then a thief couldn't login to the PC, to where I could track/recover the laptop.

How do you guys handle this? I'd like to encrypt just say, my profile, but leave everything else untouched.

Bitlocker with a tpm-chip would accomplish that. Most encryption solutions work as Truecrypt does by authenticating in a pre-boot environment.

I haven't come across any other tpm compatible software, which is the only other way to manage encryption keys that i know of.

when you have the TPM on dells & the other feature ( forgot what it was called ) your laptop can be traced and tracked.. It doesn't need to boot to windows.

If some one steals it removes the drive, the laptop can still be found too..
