hi there guys. my win2k recently crapped out on me (missing boot file) and i got a laptop for an early xmas gift. what i was wondering is, can i hook up my old harddrives to my laptop via an hdd enclosure and backup the data before i format and install a new os, or will i have to reformat the drive before i can even connect it to the laptop?

thanks

shouldn't have to reformat, just connect the drive(s) to the external enclosure and connect that to your laptop, and windows should see it.

that win2k problem. You could try doing fixboot and fixmbr from the recovery console

my problem atm is that when i put in my win2k disc (its a copy, i lost the original) and it asks me to hit any button to boot from cd, it won't respond, so maybe the cd isn't working, because i CAN get into bios w/ del.

but yeah anyway i can't even get it to go past the loadwindow where it says "press f8 to..." because it stops short and says "missing blah blah blah"

i'm hoping to backup my files, and then install winxp or something and that my problems are software based and not hardware haha
