Enabling Hyper Threading on a Pentium 4

I know there's probably another thread for this, but I couldn't find it, sorry.

When you want to change processor settings, like overclocking and HT, you just go into BIOS set up and alter the processor's settings & multipliers right? Well on my old Dell system that has a pentium 4 HT processor, when I go to processor in the BIOS it tells me that the values are only readable, not alterable. Does the computer manufacturer lock the computer's settings? Is there any simple way to unlock it so I can play around with my cpu clock speed and HT, which is currently disabled?
 
Dude, you got a Dell! Seriously though: thats how a lot of Dells are (read only bios in most areas). Are you positive the CPU is actually HT? I'd imagine the option would be editable if it was, or perhaps the board doesn't support it.
 
What Dell do you have? Most of the time the option is in the BIOS under Performance. If you could also lise the CPU that you have in the system. Or you could call Dell :D
 
Yeah, it's funny; I payed extra to buy a hyper threading processor, then I check it and it's been disabled all this time, and then I find I can't enable it... even though they tell you it's a hyper threading processor-lame! It could be the board.

All I have for processor is Pentium 4 530 (FSB right?) prescott 3.00 GHz, D0 stepping. Everest says HT supported but disabled. Awesome.

There should be an option in the bios. I have an old 2.8 VAIO that allows me to only disable or enable HT in the bios, nothing else.
 
It's a dimension 8400, 4-5 years old. Bios doesn't really let me do anything except change boot order.
 
well on my dell e310/3100 with a p4 HT 2.8ghz, the BIOS lets me enable or disable the HT, maybe he BIOS isnt up to date? the e310 had four BIOS updates so yea maybe yours does too?

I've used an 8400 before, isn't it under the performance tab?
 
its there somewhere in the bios because I enabled it on my fathers Dell a few years ago. I never understood why it was disabled in the first place.
 
If windows was installed on there with HT disabled, would it still install the multiprocessor HAL? Otherwise you might be up a creek even if you can enable it in the bios.
 
Perhaps you need to change the page you're on? Page up/down sometimes. Read the labels ;)

XP won't automatically install the multiprocessor HAL. There is, however a script you can run to do it for you so you don't have to re-install windows.

And to the OP. Update your BIOS to the latest version. The earlier versions had very very bad issues on the Dimension 8400s.

And yes, there is a place to enable hyperthreading in the BIOS.

If it is "locked", you may need to "unlock" it... there should be a line that says "unlock" or something to that effect. If it is locked and you don't know the password, you may have to call DELL to get the universal password to unlock it.... and then make sure you disable the password.
