I was just curious, Can you hook speakers and a set of headphones up to the EMU 0404 at the same time, and somehow switch between the two?

where would one get such a gizmo? and since I don't have an amp, how would I hook the headphones and speakers up one at a time? I won't damage my gear by using the headphones and speakers with the card before I get an amp right?

Good question.
Something like this will take no less then 4 adapters to connect to a 0404 so in my opinion you are better off building your own solution.
(the 0404 has 1/4" outputs and that is the main problem here)

It's not an ideal setup but it won't hurt the card at all.

Here is a parts list for a DIY solution. :D
(I am assuming you have read the DIY cable thread so I am gonna skip the how to make a cable part)

RCA input jacks.

Panel mount stereo minijack

DPDT switch

1/4" stereo output jack for the headphones

Randomly selected Project box


To assemble it you will need a drill, some solder, some wire, a soldering iron and some hand tools.

All you need to do is connect the L/R signal terminals from the rca jacks and the headphone output jack to the center terminals on the switch and then connect the L/R signal wires from either the top or bottom terminals on the switch to the minijack (this will serve as the output for the speakers).
Connect all of the grounds together and you're done.
Easy huh? :D

Note: you can find comparable parts at your local Radio Shack store and save about $10 on shipping. ;)
Note two: The setup above is wired so the headphones are always "on" if you want to turn them off you simpy unplug them.
You could always add another switch between the input and the headphone jack to avoid having to unplug them to turn them off.
 
Thats badass, I had no Idea it would be that simple. I read you tutorial on DIY cable, and I think its swell :) I get how to make the mini to mini cables, and the rca pairs, but how would you make something like that 1/4" mono to 1/8" stereo female adapter I showed you? I just don't get the concept of having one connecter on one end, and two on the other. Do you just split more wires of the cable or something?

Thats really generous of you to make up that list. From the other work you've done with headphone amps, cables, etc.., it really shows how much skill you have.
 
oh, and my speakers will be using a mini jack

could you reword that paragraph on how to build the switch box with two switches....also do i need wire to solder between the termals or what?
 
If you're going to do that.. you may as well add a CMOY amp to your headphone out of your switch. *whistles* ;)

Out of all honesty it does, and thanks. I do homeschool, and building things like these counts as an elective If I build enough of them. Your helping me get through high school.

edit: why should i get parts from radio shack if they suck? and will the jacks come with all the necessary cables to connect to the terminals?

those links are useful. I like the last one. First I am going to order the cheap cable just so I can used my speakers and headphones. then I am going to order the materials for the switch and the interconnect. I will send you guys a parts list just in case you have any suggestions.


Damn I'm going to feel satisfied once I have built these things. I'll talk to you guys soon, im just going out to get the needed tools.

Everything looks good but the RCA plugs you linked for the cables are out of stock.
That's not so bad cause you will need heatshrink or color coded plugs so you know what one is the left channel and what one is the right channel without jumping through hoops to figure it out.

Their component parts are decent.
The problem is they are massively overpriced. ;)

Nope... it doesn't matter.
My thing is that RCA's are more compatable with more devices but.... pft, when you make your own cables that doesn't matter much does it? :D

Nope.... that is a sloppy WAY to do it.
And you will end up chasing your tail trying to figure out why you have problems like intermitent connections.
Wire them all together.

I suggested a plastic one cause they are much easier for first timers to work with... but feel free to pick whatever case you want. ;)



You should have left that homeschool bit out..... cause now I am inclined to think that you should earn that credit by making some of your own decisions here. :D
 
Well, there some basic things I need to know. Now i really don't want to pry here, but when you mean stranded cable, do you mean the sort of microphone cable I am using for my interconnect?
 
When you cut a wire open, it's either one solid wire, or a bunch of higher gauge wires stranded together. Stranded wire is preferred for it's flexibility.
 
right on. I'll just order a little more of the dayton pro cable for the switch.
