I've been wanting to re-arange my computer room latley. I have an air conditioner (box style) on the far side, and my computer facing the opposite wall (maybe 10 feet). Would it be at all possible to run it under the air conditioner and not have any problems? I have done a few searches, and haven't came up with anything decent. I hear CRTs might be affected more, but im on a 19 inch LCD at the moment.

On a related note, is it alright to open the case and change HSF (involves removing MB) in an air-conditioned room? Does the AC cause static problems? Is it safer to work in a non-AC environment? I do have one of those anti-static wrist bands.

For the most part you don't have to worry about EMI if your case is made out of a metal and your parts are fully enclosed. (the case is a simple faraday cage)

If you open up your PSU and take it out of its enclosure (another faraday cage), it would be a huge EMI source and could potentially result in data corruption with exposed cables, such as HDD/CD-ROM cables. If you just put the whole system together with exposed PSU on a board and live near an airport and have the computer near window-level (it is rumored) you may have black/white vans driving around your neighborhood within a few weeks looking for the EMI source.

But as long as your (metal) case is sealed, you don't need to worry too much about outside interference or the interefence your computer generates / case leaks.

CRT monitors are usually more succeptable to EMI and other magnetic interference because magnetic fields are used to control the image display and outside interference can distort the image.


As to changing stuff with the AC on. Just make sure that it is at least somewhat humid where you change parts (but don't do it in the shower :p). Higher relative humidity suppresses static electricity. In Antarctica (or was it the North Pole with all of those research stations?) where the temp is below freezing, and there is like no humidity static electricity is a huge problem with CRTs (supposedly) exploding when touched, etc. You shouldn't have problems unless it is the dead of winter :p
