I have the new Emachine 6805...love it except one thing
BF1942 takes forever to load. I know its got the 4200 rpm drive.

I can get a 7200rpm drive for about 215...I know that would help, but would a firewire or USB2.0 external drive be any faster than the 4200rpm drive I have. I can get an external driver for about 100 bucks cheaper than the internal and use it to back up data of all my boxes ( and that fact helps sell it to the CFO of the family...my wife :) Also I am seeing SATA adapters for Cardbus...is that faster than USB2.0 or Firewire ?
 
I too have one of the ones with the slower drive ( ohhh well wasnt one of the lucky ones, did get a perfect screen so I'm happy ) The faster internal drive I think would be your best bet. One thing to really think about is upgrading the ram, 512 megs aint really enough for BF1942. A few here have already upgraded it and have seen a nice performance improvement.
 
I agree..allready was thinking of the RAM upgrade..I might try the USB2.0 route for fun...not like I can't use the drive as a backup if it does not make BF load quicker
 
I had a Maxtor usb 2 drive some time back. Wasnt really happy with the speeds, it was easier & alot quicker for me to pop the side of the system open and do my backups much quicker with an open ide.
 
I currently have a Maxtor One-Touch hooked up to my 6805 via USB 2.0, and I can tell you for a fact that NOTHING will load faster via this method versus the 4200 HD.
 
Would an external SATA with an SATA carbus adapter be any better than a USB 2.0 drive. That sucks about USB 2.0 ...though it was fast
 
firewire drives can actually go faster than a internal ide one could

sata would also be a option
 
Upgrade the hard drive, it is worth.
For the external drive, use it connected to firewire.
 
With BF1942 RAM is very important. I would upgrade you RAM first. See how that works, then upgrade the drive if you feel its nessiary.

I don't know how slow the 4200 drives are though, seeing I have a 5400 8mb :D .

I've got a Maxton One-Touch USB/Firewire dive sitting right here on my desk, plugged in to the m6805. The only thing it's good for is file storage.
 
I have read quite a few posts with people having problems opening up the m6805, is it hard to upgrade the ram? I also thought I heard someone say there was only one slot, or that one was blocked or soetmhing.
 
Yeah the memory upgrade is the worst upgrade EVER! At least for the slot under the keyboard. The one on the outside/bottom panel is like a 1 to 2 second job, but it's ease factor is easily overshadowed by the annoyance factor of Mem slot #2. My understanding too is that emachines will invalidate your warranty if you chose to upgrade that memory under the keyboard, but they might be able to arrange to install it for you. (Again this is hearsay from other posts, so I don't know for sure).
 
that is so retarded, why didn't they just put the 1st slot under the keyboard and the 2nd slot in the easy to reach place? Woudln't that make alot more sense? SO how do u upgrade it and not void the warranty? Would it be better to get the best buy protection plan?
 
I bought the Hitachi 7200 rpm 60 gb hard drive, and did see some improvement. The 4200 rpm that was in the machine appeared too slow and took quite a while to load games. Especially BF1942.

I recently purchased BF Vietnam, and noticed that I kept getting hesitation during online gaming, all the while noticing that my hard drive light was showing that the drive was being accessed near constantly and that was what was causing the hesitation.

But.........I bought 512 mb of ram and put it in the external memory taking me to 768 mb total, and I saw a big difference in the time that it took to load games, and also no accessing of the hard drive, and thusly no hesitation during game play.

I have the emachines 6805.

Retarded? Yep you got it! I realized that after I tried in vain to add new RAM without dismantling the frame and other unseen stuff, like heat shield and that blasted card reader.

Well I heard people buying stick of ram and sending it in with their unit to Emachines, who supposedly will upgrade it at no additional cost (this is hear say). You can have Best Buy send it out to their service repair center and upgrade it for you, but it'll be like a week without. (DO NOT have the in-store techs try to do it, not unless you want them to kill your unit. I don't believe all that many in-store techs have tinkered as much as I have with this laptop to know what goes where!) OR you can attempt it yourself... again realize and acknowledge your skill level before doing this and YES, make sure you have SOME kind of extended warranty covering your butt. (Remember that extended warranties may or may NOT give you a loaner and it can take up to 2-3 weeks on repairs, worst case scenario)

Actually, it's possible to install the memory without taking out the MMC PCB. It's ok to let the BB techs install the memory ONLY IF they know what they are doing. Which is far and few. I guess the best way to know their stuff is to ask if they know what hardocp is.

Yeah it IS possible to install that memory stick without removing the MMC PCB, BUT its almost a bigger chore to attempt to slide the RAM in all while using a paper clip to hold back the clip on the unseen far side. Plus the extremely low head room from the PCB and the heat shield above it makes for a terribly odd angle to introduce and to push the ram in to lock down in place! Trust me I tried it.. wasted 2 hrs trying to get the RAM to seat properly vs. 1 hr taking things apart for a full visual! (maybe if you have really really really small and fair hands with spindley spider like fingers, you may find the task simple)

Holy shit, you totally dismantled that thing. How do you go about taking out the outer housing? You need to dislodge the LCD portion first right?

And where did you get the spare parts for the DVD writer? I've been looking on ebay and around for any to stick in my 6805.

Yeah I recalled seeing some of your pictures, I assume they were yours of the machine open and what not. I had done the same thing, taken my unit apart to upgrade my memory to 1gig. I bought my emachines unit on 1/30/04 and opened it up that night to put in the memory. I didn't think to take pictures, but admittedly I followed suit after seeing your pictures. Call it you were my inspiration... didn't mean to be a copycat, but I posted pictures (at a different forum) of my unit's private internals to let other know what would be involved in a memory upgrade, if they choose to remove the PCB card and not use a J-shaped paperclip. I figured I'd also take some pictures of me swapping out the CPU to a 3400+.

LOL I was just JOKING!!!!. I know i know I thought I could have some fun with it. No matter to me I just like a bottom feeder and do after others have done to make it easier on me.
 
They work.

I haven't tried one because it's $400 dollars...but according to Emachines...they work.
