eMac OS X Booting Issues

Ok, so I'm a PC veteran but know next to nothing about macs. Anyway, this old lady that I do computer lessons/support for has an eMac, and out of the blue it just started booting to a command prompt. On the screen was:

:/ root#

I got the system to boot back to the login screen by running an upgrade install of OS X. I thought I was golden, but alas, now every time I try to log in im kicked back to the login screen! Also, I ran the diagnostic on the OS X disk and everything checks out fine.

The kicker is that no data is backed up and I'm not comfortable opening up the system to retrieve the hard disk and get the data off using another computer. Any ideas how to get it running again, or to atleast get the data off of it?

If you've got the original restore discs, or even the upgrade disks, you can do an "Archive and Install" this will preserve all of the user data and install a new system. You can also use the password reset utility on the restore or upgrade disks to simply reset the password on the currently installed system.
 
I'll try that archive and restore thing. Sadly the password reset won't work. I can log in but I just get back to the login screen. It's not the wrong password.
