EM64T....64 bit!?

Long story short: Awhile ago, I bought a 3.4ES LGA775 CPU from a forum member here. Today, I finally got around to installing CPU-Z, and it tells me that my CPU has SSE1, SSE2, SSE3, AND EM64T!

EM64T, I read the Wikipedia Article about it, but it kinda flew over my head. What does this mean, exactly? Should I upgrade from my 915 board to a 64-bit chipset? I haven't a clue, i'm a video card/networking/case modding type of guy.
 
If you want to use the 64-bit functionality, then yes, you'll need a 925 chipset, or better, which supports EM64T. But since it's an engineering sample, I don't think it's 100% guaranteed that EM64T will actually work, and be compatible with all software. You might want to test if it actually works and is able to run 64 bit OSes before buying a new motherboard.

No, we've been over this before. :p The 915 or better is compatible with EM64T. http://www.intel.com/products/processor/pentium4/ Here's a list of 3 pages of 915 boards that support EM64T CPUs: http://indigo.intel.com/mbsg/results.aspx?orgid=0&aryattrid=119 . That's not a complete list, all 915 boards with a current BIOS (i.e. newer than August 2004 for 5x1 and newer than March 2005 for 6x0) should support 5x1 and 6x0 chips.

I've installed my 551 and 630 processors in Dimension 4700 and Optiplex GX280 (and SC420) systems, both use the 915 chipset (or E7220, the server version of the 915 chipset). The 3.4ES (if it's a Prescott 1MB) is functionally equivalent, besides the unlocked multipliers, to the P4 551,

WHOA WHOA whoa...being a ES cpu doesent meen that stuff wort work on it..all a es chip really is,is a cpu that intel turned the 14/18 mylty's on,added the es to the cpu microcode and sent out to a company for testing,that cpu will work 100% and if it's a EO core will oc like a mofo! Come on over and u can learn more

I mentioned in a previous thread that I saw one user with an 865 motherboard and an EM64T CPU on xtremesystems, but generally 865/875 boards don't support 5x1 and 6x0 CPUs.

The ASUS P5P800S (intel 848P chipset) supports EM64T CPUs, and that has to be the lowest end Intel chipset with EM64T support. :p Generally 848P boards don't support EM64T either. Too bad because the low end EM64T Celerons (3x1/3x6) could use a cheap platform.

These are just 848/865/875 oddballs though.
 
Yep, I saw on CPU-Z that this was labelled as a 551. Thank you for the info, I'm starting to believe this CPU was worth my 6800u

It seems my 915GAV is on that list of compatible boards...looks like its time for a BIOS update :)

Also, I see that when I'm not doing anything, the CPU drops to 2.8ghz, then speeds up when I am. I know this is normal, but from my standpoint (NOT a CPU guy :) ) it's kinda cool. How do I test this? I can install the 64-bit XP on a second HDD...is that the only way?
 
Okay, I didn't know that. On the Intel website, only 925 and higher are listed as supporting EM64T, I suppose these other boards have unofficial support for it. Question is, does the board of the TS support it too? If not, he'll still need a new board.
 
Ah...I seem to have gotten XP Pro-64 to be running on my computer. Yes, Scali, a lowly D915GAV-L :) I did get it to run OS-X too :p which is nice; due to the SSE3 support.

I do have a sale for the proc going on over here but I need to know if the price is outrageously high or something. Newegg has a 3.4 775 NEW for around 275, but this is ES, and with EM64T, which all the 3.4s on the 'Egg don't have. Suggestions?
