I have my htpc hooked up to my tv via hdmi is it possible to hook up an elo touchscreen in the kitchen to control the htpc as far as music and what not?
Thanks
JJ

Yes, it is. Thats exactly what im doing (except its a dell).

Now... you can do this as long as your video card has a 2nd output (like vga, but if its already got HDMI im 100% certain it has either a VGA and/or a DVI port as well).

Just run an extension cable to your kitchen (they make video over cat5 devices as well now adays).

Now... the problem you may have, which I have... is my motherboard has DVI/HDMI/VGA onboard... i cant run my HDMI port at 1920x1080 when im doing CLONE mode... it makes me run it at 1024x768... im experimenting with add-on video cards now but don't have any laying around that are vista compatible.

i personally dont likethee idea of extending the same PCs video output to another room to control the HTPC

I would/will use http://www.olphro.de/wordpress/projekte/ngrc-next-generation-remote-control
NGRC or a similar product to control the HTPC

its a web based remote control, so just have the touch screen use the web interface to control the HTPC.

I want to do this with a HP touchsmart in my kitchen, when my wife and i buy our house this summer.

well i was hoping to maybe use it as a monitor in the kitchen for videos and stuff as well

uhh, yeah you still can....

use NGRC to control the HTPC

then use MCE on the PC in the kitchen to view content from the HTPC via network sharing

Isnt he going to need an iPhone then?

I just tried a standalone PCI Express video card that has HDMI/VGA out... at one point I had 1920x1080 on my HD TV and the Touch Screen monitor kinda shrunk that... then I started playing around and couldnt duplicate that. Like the onboard problem I had, i was UNABLE to use CLONE mode and have two different resolutions. I had to pick 1024x768 so that both displays showed up.

Now... i cant tell a WHOLE lot of difference in playing video back at the 1024, i tried my best to compare the two... outside of the aspect ratios being slightly off, thats the only difference I could tell.

Of course windows is larger on the HD TV now of course due to the 1024x768 resolution... but otherwise im stuck this way.

Does anybody know a way to use TWO different resolutions in CLONE mode? Extended desktop allows me, but thats not exactly what i want.

A web-based control software would be neat, i could put that on one screens extended desktop and run media center on the main HD TV... but still, its not exactly what i wanted... looks like im kinda stuck still... maybe two PCI video cards will let me have different resolutions in CLONE mode??? Any thoughts?

I was wanting to run both monitors from the htpc in the living room. Not a computer in each room. So i'm guessing something in the way of a viewsonic airpanel would be better. Although i would love a touchscreen in the kitchen to change music and watch some videos.

NGRC is just a web based remote control...... it is used with anything that is a touchscreen that has wifi....

hence the computer, i used it with a nokia 770 internet tablet

Clone is just that, a duplication. A basic requirement of cloning is to have both monitors displaying the same resolution. So you either need to lower the res of your HDTV to your monitor, or see if you can get a touchscreen LCD with the same res as your HDTV.

I don't think there's a way around it... The other option is to get a mini-pc like Asus' eee pc, and tape/screw/lick'n'stick it to the back of the monitor. Maybe nVidia's Atom reference PC will be available for sale sometime soon.

im writing a app that is going to do this for me i have my music working on it now and will have Tv working later today then onto movies i'm going to buy an Nvidia ION to run it on then it will work wirelessly from anywhere in the house and hopefully once i get my sevices up and runnig it will be able to control the media on any system in the house

i know nvidia drivers *had* a dual mode where you could run 2 different resolutions on two different monitors... dont know anymore.

what about multimon
http://www.mediachance.com/free/multimon.htm

There's 2 different modes for multi-monitor... Clone, which means both display the same thing, at the same resolution, and extended desktop, which just spreads out the area of the desktop to include both monitors (displays different windows, programs on each monitor, and able to use different resolutions). I believe there's a 3rd mode that basically takes two identical monitors and creates a single very wide screen display, instead of 1080x1920, it'd be 1080x3840, for example. This mode is for dual-monitor gaming.

I have been trying to do the same thing kinda with my elo touchscreen.

I have a 42 in LCD that is connected to my HTPC.
I like to run 720p at the desktop and 1080p in Media Center.

But the max res on my 1024*768.

Clone is not an option because by definition and by design it requires that they display the same res.
Multimon or ultramon will not fix this.

What must be done is to Extend the desktop.
This will allow you to use additional screens at different resolutions.
Only prob is VMC can only be displayed on a single screen.

If you want something to just control VMC, then you can install that web app and have it open on the screen in the kitchen.

Yeah... tonight I hooked up my 22" Acer and my 42" HDTV... was waiting on my DVI -> HDMI cable to come in for my main system (so i can use my main system on my 42")

Now... this system arleady runs 1680x1050 so when i use that on my HD TV it thinks its 1080i, and i get better graphics for windows.

I compared the same movie on my main pc @ 1080i to the movie on my HTPC @ 1024x768 (XGA) and for what its worth, i honestly coudlnt tell ANY difference.

So i guess for movies, 1024x768 on my HD TV is just fine, windows looks funky, but thats not what my HTPC is for, its for movies... so im okay for now
