Elite Keyboards dropping Filco

I got an email from Elite Keyboards over the weekend. Here is the important part:

FILCO products have been in short supply recently, and this has been due
to our supplier not being able to meet market demand. We're very sorry
for this inconvenience; particularly at this time of the year!

Unfortunately, despite our recent efforts, our supply of FILCO products
will not be improving, so we have taken this turn of events as an
opportunity to search for alternative products which can meet our
customers' demands.

So without beating around the bush too much, in Jan/Feb 2011 EK will
offer a new keyboard line-up with Cherry MX switches!

These boards will replace all FILCO products (and then some:). We've
selected them with much discretion, and believe they will meet or exceed
the quality and functionality of FILCO products and provide a better
value in a very competitive market!

This makes sense given how constrained their supply of Filcos have been for the last few months. I guess I was lucky to get mine when I did, before the huge rush to snap them up began.

I owned a Filco and while I liked it, I did prefer other boards like the Steelseries 6Gv2, and I had heard better things about Cherry manufactured keyboards. In any case, I'm curious to see who they get to supply their Cherry MX boards in the future. Cherry themselves perhaps?

Just checked the website, no Filco boards at all now, just Reaforce and HHKB

Is there anywhere else to get a Filco? I seriously *just* started looking for a keyboard using the Brown switches and can't find anything anywhere.

I have 3 Filcos, brown and blue keyswitch 104-keys, and brown keyswitch 87-key. Other than the letters, and key-coating wearing off/going shiny, which so far has only happened to my brown 104, which has been used for 8+ hours a day for ~2 years, they're great.

I just recently ordered 2 108-key Ducky boards from PChome in Taiwan. One with Cherry brown switches and laser etched keycaps, the other with "mixed-axis cherry switches"(It has browns for letters, blues for the numeric keypad, and blacks for everything else) and PBT laser etched keycaps. They're currently running a $20 shipping special, to the USA, for up to 5 keyboards. The 2 I ordered arrived in under a week, and so far I like them as well or better than my Filcos. And the letters shouldn't be wearing off any time soon, if ever.

There are some reviews on Geekhack that indicate that the 87-key Ducky boards are a little lower in build quality than the 87-key Filco boards. The 104/108-key boards seem to be at or near parity, build quality wise.

The ducky boards range from ~110 USD shipped for a 1087, to ~155 USD shipped for a 108-key PBT board. If you still want a Filco, PChome has Filcos, both 87 and 104-key for around ~140 USD shipped. They also have the Cherry G80-3494 with Cherry red switches, which is pretty spiffy keyboard, if a tad more expensive at ~185 USD shipped.

There's a thread on geekhack covering the shipping special. Be sure to use world.pchome.com.tw, NOT www.pchome.come.tw. Google chrome's built in translation capabilities are extremely handy if you do decide to order one.

stewartjm - Thanks for the links. I really like how the Ducky keyboards have a rougher key texture, it is one of the things I like about the Steelseries.

Who knows, maybe EK has Ducky keyboards lined up to replace the Filco. We'll know in a month!

Wow, the Filco name has been a staple in the mechanical keyboard community. Sad to see EliteKeyboards dropping them. I love my Filco with Cherry Browns, and I've read that many people prefer the Filco with Cherry Blues to the Das Keyboard for minor reasons (no glossy frame on the Filco, different key pitch). Not sure if I should start seeking out a Filco with Blues or Blacks now, or if the price will shoot up due to EK not carrying them anymore. :(

Well, according to Geekhack, it's getting replaced with Leopold.

Head to Japan. Plenty there. When shortages appear the homeland takes priority.

Hopefully the LEDs aren't ultra bright like the Filcos. It was easy enough to fix on the Filco but having the lights built into the keys will probably make it bit harder.

The LEDs on the Ducky keyboards are nowhere close to the blinding spotlights that come on the Filcos(especially the blue ones on the Filco Cherry brown boards).

Those Leopold keyboards seem very nice. I like how the key texture is rougher than the smooth keys you get on the Filco.
