My electrical company says I pay $0.05807 per kWh. My kill o watt says my server uses 2.12 kWh. I run the server 24x7.

Calculated out, 24 hours a day times 30 days a month; I get $88.638048 per month to run this server. That doesn't seem to make sense, because my bill was $102 last month and that is with running another computer that is 1.24 kWh (runs ~12 hours a day) [plus all my lights and other appliances]

What am I missing? I'm trying to figure if building a lower power computer is worth the cost.

Also the kill o watt says the server takes 190 Watts (under normal load).

Your system is in no way a single machine is using that much energy. I have never seen a 2KW power supply.. Multiple machines I can buy but even then these would not work on a single 15A 110V outlet.

I pay $0.05807 per kWh

Are you sure that is it. WOW is that low. Some folks in California pay 8 times that. I pay 2 to 3 times that. However the electricity charge is around that but I also pay for transmission, distribution and then there the 5 other per W costs on my bill..

I think you are reading the amount of power used in a unit of time. I remember there is a mode to calculate the total KW used since plugged in..

At that power draw at your $0.058 per 1000WH means your system is using around 1 penny per hour.

Lets round up to a quarter per day. And then 30 days means your system costs about $7.50 per month.

5 cents seems low. Where are you exactly? 3 Mile Island?

Also... are there other charges, like delivery, maintenance fees, commodity charges etc on the bill that are pro-rated by Whr? My bills says 0.115 but it works out to 0.15 or so.

I think the kill-o-watt has an average power function of some kind, that might give a more useful value over days/nights/days-of-week

It's a dual core AMD MP with 4 drives.

the kill-o-watt says it uses 190 Watts. The other function is labeled "kWh" which displays 2.12

Yea, there are other charges like that; but have trouble making sense of them, so just trying to use this to get a general idea.

190W seems normal for that type of system. I had one of those a few years back.

You need to add up all of the per KW h charges to get the total.

Take that total and multiply it by 4.56 to get the per day cost.

BTW the calculation is

190/1000 = 0.19

0.19 * 24 = 4.56

I thought mine was really cheap. I pay $0.078204 per kwh, not including the $7 basic charge. Using Puget Sound Energy.

I don't have a bill in front of me, but I am jealous, I know mine is much higher than that. On average our bill is $375 a month...not including the propane we need every 3 weeks or so heh

My average bill in Pittsburgh, PA is around $100US for a 2500 square foot house. It does get in to the low $200s for maybe 1 month a year because of the AC. I do run 1 computer 24/7 but it uses around 110W idle (core2 quad q9550 slight OC + 6GB mem + 2 tuner cards + 7 hard drives with some spinned down).

With that said its just me and my SO Kathy.
