Electricity?

Hey guys, I just started F@H and I might set up a few rigs and I have a question. How much electricity will it cost to run these systems? I mean I get free electricity but I don't want to kill the landlord who pays for it. Thanks. :)

Depends on the size of the cpu, the rulr of thumb is 45 to 75 watts per hour per gig.

75 X 24 = 1800 watts a day or 1.8 kilowatt
1.8 X 356 = 640.8 KW per year
cost per KW in Idaho is $0.06
640.8 X .06 = $38.45 a year
1.8 X $.06 = $0.11 per day per Ghz

Your numbers will be different due to difference of power costs, and some of the really big new processors may use a different amount of power, which not having anything new I would only be able to guess at, YMMV

This seems to be correct, because of comparing my power bill, from prior to building the farm, and since is yery close to actual increase in power consumtion.

The heat bill is going down in the winter but I had to add A/C to keep the farm cool in the summer, my level pay amount has not changed, I partially heat my house by AMD :D :D

Ummm.....which systems? There is a spreadsheet floating around here somewhere that gives estimates.

I'll do some math and some assuming and we will both see :)

average PIII/celeron folding 100% with minimum HD usage and no monitor on- say 175 watts or .175 KW/H
so .175 (consumption) x 24 (hours in a day) x 31 (days in longest month) x .075 (subsitute your own KWH cost here) = $9.68 a month. I also think I guessed a little on the high side for consumption, but I'll guarantee my 2 servers use every bit of that figure.

My personal light bill varies from $110 to $150 a month, but I haven't gotten one since I added the servers so we will see.

The numbers given were pretty small. I just set up a semipron 2400 that DREW about 90 watts then I changed the HD from an old 10gig to a 200Gb and now it draws 120 watts, w/o monitor.
OSUguy has a lot more specs.
Search on kill-a-watt, it's a meter I use.

gnewbury: could you fire that system up with no hard drive, just for comparison's sake? I'd be interested in your results.
fold-server++! :D

Nope, not till it finishes a big ass WU.

Here where I live, its about 8-10 dollars a month per Gig machine and 17" CRT monitor.

My 6.5 boxen use around 1.5 Kw per hour.
So 1500 / 27 = 55 watts per Ghz.
And 1.5 x 24 x 30 = 1,080 Kwh per month.
At £0.056 per Kwh = £60 per month.

Luck....... :D
