I want to make sure I got this down.

First off, I was unable to find a real clear description for how my electric company charges me their rate per KWH. This is the best I could come up with. I use Dayton Power and Light in here in Central Ohio. I found a PDF file on Google, mentioning that they charge $0.06 per KWH up to 1,500 KHW mo. The rate gradually steps down from there.

But if my math is correct, here is what I came up with. Anyone see anything wrong with this?

I used my Kill-A-Watt meter to determine how many watts under full load my PS3 used to fold. It logged in at 200w.

So I assumed that it would take 5 hours to consume 1KWH. 24 hours in a day, so 4.08 KWHs consumed in a 24 hour period if the PS3 were on all day.

4.08KWH x 30 days/month = 122.4KWH, again assuming the PS3 ran 24/7. Add those KWH to their said rate at 0.06KHW = $7.34 month to run the PS3 24/7.

Does this sound right, I know that YMMV but does this sound reasonable to some of you folding veterans out there? Also, I would hope someone would chime in that is running some serious hardware at home, and let me know what kind of difference you see in your power bill each month.

I just don't want to get a $500 electric bill.. so I am trying to get some ideas for long term solution to fold. Even if that means to take my folder cpu over to the in-laws and let it soak up their electricity to offset my time in fixing their computer every week :D

Lastly, I am not 100% certain that the rates I found for Dayton Power and Light are even correct, so if someone wants to chime in about that to confirm/deny that lives in the Ohio valley area -- and if this Kill-A-Watt thing is even accurate. :rolleyes: IDK

24hrs x 200w = 4.8Kwatts/day x 30 = 144Kwatts/mo @ $.06/Kwatt= $8.64.
200watts is about right for a PS3

I know the KWH rate is higher then in Columbus, I have friends there although I can't recall what they told me the last time we were discussing electric bills they were way higher then that.

Mine charge per KWH is currently $0.18 so I would kill for your rate.

My issue is and remains no matter how many times I have read usage using the killowatt and tried to compute that into my electric bill I show way less usage then the electric company does. I have tried 3 different Killowatt units, all read the same for each computer or appliance on which they have been used.

I have showed those results to PPL, my electric company and their stock answer is, "So what?". It seems the total responsiblity to show them they are wrong is all on me. All they have ever done is walk through the house and say "your bill looks normal for everything you have". If I pay a service fee, they will replace the meter, however, if it happens to read higher then they will not replace it again for any amount of money. Ok, end of rant;)

Like I said, I'd kill for your rate:D

Deregulation was good for no one except the utility companies and polititions.
 
I agree. Just be glad you don't live in texas. Deregulation has lead to $500+/mo power bills. And we're only talking about small 2 bedroom apt here. So glad I only wasted 10 months of my life there last year.
 
I live in Columbus (AEP for electric company) and since I started folding my monthly useage is even with my summer useage, so I expect some high useage this summer if it's hot. I'm actually using a lot less power than I thought I was. Something has changed since last year. I used to average around 7000kwh and now I'm hitting around 5000kwh...

I run a whole bunch of PC's and have a large house to light and air condition.

I'm looking at my bill and it doesn't really spell out the rate, other than saying in order to save me money a new supplier must offer me a rate less than 2.8cents/kwh. There are a ton of different layers of charges...who can make sense of this stuff?

March useage was 5281kwh.
 
When it comes to electric bills, you must read the fine print.
Some companies charge not only for the power, they also charge to deliver it.

My company charges 0.06 per kwh, but when you add in the delivery charge and taxes, it comes to 0.135 per kwh.




 
My power runs 15c/kwh on peak (9am - 9pm) and 5cents/kwh the rest of the time. Works out to be about 10c/kwh average. It can be a real drag to try and figure it all out, depending on how well things are spelled out in your bill.

You can also get high-efficiency power supplies, which can help take some of the sting out of the electric bill. Going from an el-cheapo 65-70% efficient PSU to a 83-85% one helps alot, and they aren't that expensive anymore.
