Hey,

I've just completed my 1st water cool loop.

I'm running EKWB 360 HFX Kit on my 4770K Haswell (ROG Hero),
After consulting the EK Support i also purchased the VGA Universal Block
for my GB 280X Windforce 3.

Upon installing the block, FURMARK or any other stress test instantly
made the card crash.

On idle it runs on 45C and 100% it reaches 88-94 then "dies".

When i reassembled the Stock Cooler (its like a jet taking off) it runs at 38C
on idle and 63 MAX on furmark (with 4xMSAA its up to 73).

I tried using ramsinks on all the VRM chips.

Nothing worked...

Am i doing something wrong?

uuhh... no... :p

I was not aware its needed...
The Tech Rep did not say anything about it...
It also wasn't on the manual...

I kinda felt the Block did make contact with the GPU... perhaps i was wrong?

That is a constant problem with AMD cards, and the new gpus, share pretty much the sema layout including this space... hmm... so yes they need a spacer. The same goes to universal gpu blocks :(

Sorry for the late answer,

You need to use the adapter on 79xx and 280x cards with an universal gpu waterblock since the chip is slightly recessed and won't make contact with the waterblock without it.

The Tech Reps from Ek should have told you that. If you check on http://www.coolingconfigurator.com/ you'll see the adapter is listed on all 280x cards.

Thanks alot,

i've order the spacer from frozencpu.com.

I hope this will resolve the issue.

:)

So what you're saying is that a bare gpu making no contact with the ek waterblock ran 45C. On top of that the gpu shut itself down after hitting out of speck temps? That's pretty cool, so no damage to the gpu and it functioned fine after reattaching the stock cooler?

Something similar happened to me with the 7970 and a universal gpu block. No damage to the GPU :)

Success!

Received the spacer, idle temp now is 21C and on 100% Load
its 30C +/-. On BF4 it reaches 40C Max.

:)
